Biography

[CW: Mention of nazis, and later of death]

Gagarin was named for the Soviet pilot and cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, most famous for being the first human to enter space and orbit the Earth. This feat was achieved on April 12, 1961, in the Vostok 1 capsule.

Yuri was born to a small farming family on March 9, 1934. Early in his childhood, during WWII, his home was occupied by Nazi soldiers. The Gagarins were forced to live in their backyard, in what's basically a gosh dang hobbit hole, until the Nazis left the area at the end of the war.

Yuri's interest in space began in his childhood. He studied astronomy and aeronatics fairly informally throughout his childhood. He eventually went on to study to become a pilot in the Soviet military. He was first sent to one of the most remote airfields in the USSR, but he was still so excited about his new job, he camped out next to the airfield the night before he started!

When the Space Race kicked off with the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957, Yuri gained an interest in becoming a cosmonaut. He ended up selected for training to become one, and later became a part of the Vostok 6, an elite group of the first Soviet cosmonauts. In an anonymous vote, all but 3 of his peers voted that he should be the first man in space.

After the Vostok 1 mission, Yuri became an instant celebrity. He was awarded the highest award available to a Soviet pilot, Hero of the Soviet Union, as well as... an extremely long list of awards that I never even tried to remember, including some which were awarded posthumously as late as 2008. He toured much of the world (skipping over America, of course, likely as much out of fear of a violent political move as patriotism.)

Yuri was backup for the ill-fated Soyuz 1 mission, famous for being the first in-flight spaceflight fatality. I'll spare the goriest of details... Soyuz 1 was launched long before it was ready to meet a deadline of Lenin's birthday. Many of the technical specialists, as well as cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov who flew the mission, believed it to be doomed. Yuri attempted to take Vladimir's place, but Vladimir refused to let him, and Soviet officials didn't want to let someone of Yuri's international importance die. Well, Vladimir flew the mission, and it came to a fairly horrifying end. Yuri himself was banned from spaceflight.

Vladimir Komarov's death affected Yuri greatly. He relapsed into a state of alcoholism. I can't quite remember how long this period lasted- I want to say about a year? In any case, he was, understandably, upset about losing a fellow cosmonaut and a friend to a mission which theoretically, he could have flown. Bad times for everyone.

Later, Yuri began working for the USSR as a pilot once again, since he was banned from spaceflight, and a pilot after all. Ironically, it was this which killed him. On March 27 1968, Yuri and a flight instructor were... I don't know piloting terms, but a larger craft flew overhead at a distance which caused them to lose control of the craft, and the two plummeted to an unfortunate end.

Yuri's legacy remains in place today, as the tradition of space exploration remains alive and thriving all over the world. On every April 12, an international celebration known as Yuri's Night takes place to commemorate the Vostok 1 mission.

Source: YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW HOW MUCH I HAVE READ ABOUT THIS MAN YOU REALLY DO NOT.
Like his namesake, Gagarin is personable and outgoing with pretty much anyone who wants to talk with him. His easygoing attitude makes him easy to converse with. He's a bit of a thrill seeker, though, and fairly reckless, to the point of nearing self destruction on more than one occasion trying to see how high and fast he can fly.

A true Arcanaut at heart, Gagarin loves space and astronomy. Sometimes he tags along with Vostok and talks with him while he works on charting and cataloguing the stars. Other times, he's out on night flies, much to Vostok's dismay; he tries to keep out of his telescope's line of sight, but it's often hard to see where it's pointed from so high, especially at night!

He's absolutely DETERMINED to be one of the first dragons in space. He doesn't honestly care about glory; he just wants to go to space, and wouldn't complain about being made a part of history. But he's conflicted in that he doesn't want the achievement of spaceflight to be remembered as an achievement of the Lightning flight.

He's wary that if the Baikonur clan resides in Lightning when they inevitably successfully put a dragon into orbit, the Stormcatcher will manage to turn it into an achievement for Lightning. But Gagarin isn't a lightning dragon; he's an Arcane fae, and his interest in astronomy is largely fueled by his Arcane upbringing and lineage. In his eyes, the ideal world is one in which dragons from all over the planet can go and come as they please, not one in which one flight is remembered for their achievements in spaceflight. But perhaps that's the idealist side of Arcane speaking through him.

Gagarin is transgender and identifies as a man. It's not something he's always known, and not even one of the most important parts of his identity. He thinks of himself as an Arcanaut and a thrill-seeker who happens to be a guy. But it's strong enough that he wouldn't deny it, and corrects people who misgender him. His clan is outspokenly supportive of him (or even violently, if you're rude about it in front of Challenger; but that's just as much her own tumultuous nature as it is her support.)

RELATIONSHIPS
Vostok: Very Informal Apprentice
Challenger: Ex-girlfriend. They're still on friendly terms; Challenger realized two weeks into their relationship that she's a lesbian and backed out. Gagarin was fine with it (and even happy that he comes off as masculine enough that Challenger wasn't interested.)

Gagarin and his namesake, Yuri Gagarin. Yuri is surprisingly fae-sized.
