I.
“—and stay out!”
The hut’s door slammed with a tone of finality.
Sekhmet called on an ancient technique of relaxing herself, to help force her heart back down her throat. But it swelled there, a thick, painful ache.
She glanced over her shoulder. Lora was glaring out the window.
A thin Wildclaw peeped over Lora's back. Sorry, the intruder mouthed.
Fah. Screw it. Sekhmet slung her pack on her shoulder and set off after spitting on the ground.
II.
It was a story as old as the oldest fairytale. Just not as nice.
Sekhmet’s job as a forest ranger took her far, far away from home, sometimes for months at a time. In addition to being a ranger, she also spent time cataloguing the different creatures and drawing flower types in a leather-bound notepad. So part ranger, part scholar of nature.
When most dragons think of the Hewn City, they primarily picture the mysterious, glowing ruins that populate the hilltops. Fewer consider the dense fir-and-pine forests that shade the valleys below, or the clear dark lakes nestled within those. It was Sekhmet’s sworn duty—in part, to herself—to protect these forests from poachers and so on.
But that meant she wasn’t home much. So one day, returning home for her autumn break from the wilderness, she walked into her cabin and saw her partner Lora nuzzling some unknown blue-green girl. Arguments ensued, to put it politely.
They just don’t understand. Or didn’t. Most dragons didn’t understand how the passion for nature more than burned in Sekhmet’s heart—it formed the walls of it. Her heart was like a chapel to the forest; her service, one continuous prayer. But how to explain that to dragons who didn’t even like to be outside?
She frowned down at her own reflection in a lazy river. Red and gold leaves drifted by like sailboats. Then she was startled by a pair of large, luminous eyes peering back at her - eyes that weren’t her own. Patting the top of her head got her a handful of sort fur and a squeak.
She hurriedly pulled the cat into her arms, cooing and murmuring. A ranger had sympathy for all species of animal—cats especially.
“Hey there, girlfriend. You lonely too? What’s happening?”
The cat leapt down, and now Sekhmet saw the anxiety bristling her fur. The cat swished her tail as if to say follow me.
So Sekhmet did.
They hadn’t gone far through the forest — sunlight and shadow dappling the ground before them — before Sekhmet saw it: a big owl was menacing a small nest of kittens. Each time the owl lunged forward, the kittens retreated, hissing.
She knew it was the circle of life and that ranger shouldn’t interfere…but these were cats, her favorite animal.
With a growl, Sekhmet strode forward, lashing her tail like a whip, cracking it until the owl retreated with a flutter of wings and a shower of feathers. The kittens cowered, fearful of the large dragon—until momma cat came and wended her way through Sekhmet’s legs.
She settled down there for the night, letting the kittens crawl all over and provide her with warmth. And by sunrise the next day, the six of them were inseparable.
III.
It was about a week before she saw another dragon. Being a ranger, that week among lonely nature soothed Sekhmet’s soul.
She had adored Lora for a long time. Her lovesickness caused mild hallucinations - Sekhmet thought she saw Lora among the wild clover, or in the silhouette of an ash tree.
She understood, though, why it had to be hard to love someone who was never around. And someday, she hoped to forgive her.
The kittens dozed in her knapsack, a warm and comfortable weight on her back. Her heart was slowly mending.
One crisp autumn day, she happened across a fellow traveler—a Pearlcatcher—who took one look at her and laughed, “Madam, looks like you could use a new home.”
In that instant, it was like a sore weight fell away from Sekhmet's heart. Her departure from Lora became complete.
She sighed. "Does your clan need a ranger?”
“Yes indeed. We’ve had plenty of poachers.” The Pearlcatcher offered her hand, but Sekhmet simply smiled.
“Got room for six?’
“Six?”
The cats all peeped out from her bag, and Sekhmet and the other dragon shared a hearty laugh. Her heart had been heavy—but there was still hope.
