"I am never more awake than when I am asleep." Morpheus has always felt more at home in the land of dreams than the realm of dragons, even if that home was often the stuff of nightmares, making him keep himself awake for days on end to avoid entering it accidentally. It always seemed more real, more solid than anything in the waking world. As he grew older, he learned to control his travels through the dreamscape better and was able to avoid the scarier areas when he wanted pleasant dreams. He later sought out such dark, shadowy patches as a means of testing his strength, fighting against the nightmares that once terrified him and often as not defeating them. Dragons around him were frequently confused when he showed himself the next morning covered in unexplained cuts, for he wasn't the sort to get into fights; he rarely engages in physical confrontations in the material realm. Injuries weren't the only tangible souvenirs he brought back from the land of dreams, however - he also learned how to bring physical objects back with him. Articles of clothing that would never fit any dragon, precious gems not found beneath the surface of the earth, books and scrolls with tales never told in any draconic tongue, strange flora and fauna with exotic hues that looked even odder in the waking world, bizarre artifacts whose features and functions were hard to determine...soon his lair was filled with odd and wonderful things, and dragons came from all over to buy such curiosities. The most daring "thing" he took from his dreams was the beauteous dream creature Melinoe, who had taught, advised, and defended him as he explored his dreams. In the waking world, she assumed the form of a dragon and became his mate, though she still accompanies him on his nightly adventures. Their explorations through the dreamscape led them to a place where the boundaries between material and ethereal were perilously thin, an island called Prufrock in the Starfall Isles. Concerned, they decided to travel there to warn the residents, so they packed up their hoard of dream objects and relocated to Prufrock. They were surprised to find spirits walking among the dragons - apparently Melinoe wasn't the only one who had moved through the barrier and assume a material form. Only the clan's exorcists took their dream warning seriously, however. Most of the island's inhabitants, both dragons and spirits, thought that the veil between the realms was perhaps a bit unstable due to the traffic between them but would hold against any large amount of spirits trying to break through. Morpheus and Melinoe took no pleasure in having been right when the barrier was breached by an inundation of hostile spirits who overwhelmed the island's residents. The two oneiromancers had been forewarned by their dreams, so they had already taken shelter in Lantern Port on the mainland and thus survived the attack unscathed. After the spirits had been driven back and the breach sealed as best it could be, they went back to the island to meet with the exhausted and demoralized residents, who finally agreed that some changes needed to be made. Several of the resident spirits resolved to depart from the island, and those who remained promised to limit their travel through the veil. Those with magical talent, both dragons and spirits, dedicated themselves to work with the exorcists to rebuild the barrier that divided the realms and help to more permanently seal it against malevolent spirits. For their part, Morpheus and Melinoe promised to patrol the dreamscape and search for weaknesses within it. They also offered to guard the dreams of any in the clan who wished for such protection. Mentally and emotionally scarred by the battle, several of the clan's residents took them up on their offer. The oneiromancers have found their closest friends in the meditation specialist Tamaloa and his mate Moanna. Though neither of them possess the ability to enter the dreamscape themselves, Morpheus and Melinoe have found their meditative techniques close to those they use to control their own dreams, and they have been experimenting with entering the dreamscape through meditation rather than through sleep. Melinoe and Moanna also share a love of pools, and between them they maintain both Tama's meditative pools and the clan's bathing and recreational pools. Original lore by Salathielly |
