left the Scarred Wasteland as a young runaway guardian; as the runt of the nest, he....wasn't treated well.
outside, he told people he was looking for his Charge; nevermind that he never felt the Call. nevermind that he never would.
met Azmidiske at Astrella University
fell so hard he agreed to go with her back to the Scarred Wasteland to set up their own place of research
honestly at that point he would've agreed if she'd asked him to jump into the Wyrmwound
this was, obviously, a Mistake
ill-advised teen shenanigans resulted in unexpected parenthood, and without the magical aid used in expected parenthood, the hatchlings' health suffered
Hadar was rapidly defeated; while Rukh seemed to be okay, Alrescha too had seemed healthy at first, and Pia had never been well.
this, he thought, was punishment for his hubris. everything he touched turned to ash. his parents had been right. time, perhaps, to do what they could not.
Azmidiske was vehemently against this, and it split them apart utterly
for all her defending, though, Alrescha and Pia had heard enough and left in the night for parts unknown.

afterwards, Az cut off all contact, and has barely spoken more than a dozen civil words to him in the 21 years since
nowadays, though, it's less cold shoulders, heated glares, and going for the verbal jugular, and more the awkwardness of exes and the occasional passing jab to prove there's still no forgiveness.
Hadar's been in and out of relationships since then, though he's never quite gotten over Az
over time he's come to realise he was a very stupid 18 year old, and an even more stupid 23 year old
his and Az's relationship hasn't much improved, but he's somewhat reconnected with Rukh, though it's still awkward.
he also at some point realised he'd never been comfortable as a guardian; always too big, always looked to for protection, always viewed as incomplete and broken for neither having found nor even wanting to find his Charge.
from there he did his research and eventually acquired a wildclaw breed change scroll and hasn't looked back

in general:

fairly low-empathy, but he's trying
saying this, when he does connect with someone he connects hard. (Az was the first of these, which might be why everything turned out like it did.)
