"Mercy? I do not know it"

______ His life began in the pit. He hatched among a sea of eggs and hatchlings, crying out for food, water, perhaps their mother.
But this nest, this nursery was not a home. Each of them had been selected for another purpose.
Among the flame and molten earth, some dragons are chosen to fight from birth for the interest of their Flight. He was one of those dragons. He grew hardened, training from the instant he broke out of his egg, until all he knew was biting and tearing, sinister blows and mighty roars. It was violent, and yet he thrived. His captains, old dragons that looked as if they too were molded from the flames, praised his strength. Soon he had been groomed and prepared to join the ranks of his brothers, a member of the army of flame. That is how he spend his adolescence, fighting the beast clans, preserving the flame's dominance, a nameless soldier.

It was one battle that changed this. A still young dragon, he was the most vicious and cunning out of all his peers. He could hold his own against the beasts, he would bring down his claws and sword on any enemy. And for a time, he felt untouchable. Then, one mission, he was asked to lead his brothers and sisters deep into the mountains and destroy a small clan of beasts that had threatened the nesting grounds nearby. Hastily, he led his warriors forward, it would be easy. Days passed, the band of soldiers found themselves soundly beaten ,and he could not come to terms with the result. The beasts had outsmarted him, over powered him, destroyed him.

Soon after, he was given leave, the captains had no time for failures.

______ Years after, he survived once more through his power. Yet he was not the same. Now, a mercenary for hire, he found solitude and riches through fulfilling the needs of others. Serving those with enough gems or gold was not honorable, not like the warriors had been, but it paid a debt. He was weary, traveling from land to land, offering his fighting prowess to any that could pay, and he grew middle aged as he did so, a dragon of weathered scale and mind.

It was a single battle that changed him again. He had been hired to secure a nest from a clan in the ice. The dragons, strangely touched by something he could only describe as shade, paid him well, and so he did not question it. Eggs were eggs, he did not care where they hatched, or if they hatched at all. Alone, he observed the clan, a mess of many dragons, lively, close-knit. It would be easy to exploit their weakness and retrieve the eggs. Once his plan was made, he acted. It was easy to sneak into the nesting grounds, secure 5 of the crystal-shelled eggs, and make his way out. But as he dashed across the tundra, fast enough that he knew he couldn't be followed, he was blocked on all sides. Giant imperials surrounded him, beasts adorned with the symbol of the clan, and armor of many colors. The forces had seen him, found a hole in his plan, and it was over. Yet he fought, snarling, slashing, roaring until a golden knight struck him down, cutting his wings and crippling any chance of escape. He had failed again.

The clan, the Aurora, brought him before their leader, a spiral that looked at him with anger, but not disgust. It surprised him. Egg thieves were the lowest for many dragons, but the spiral only roared at him, and asked him who had sent him. Weak and unable to read the clan, he told them everything. Soon he was given into the custody of the clan's second-in-command. The dragon was huge, and imperial of mottled ice-colored scales. He expected the other dragon to snarl at him, but instead, the imperial before him was calm. It was off putting, these dragons that seemed so knowing. The imperial, Deleo, called in the golden knight that had crippled him, and they discussed his fate. He knew he would be imprisoned or perhaps destroyed, it was the same either way, a failure, he knew, was useless.

But the two other dragons discussed his fate with a mild manner, and once decided they turned to him and thanked him for his information. They told him that they would fight the dragons that had hired him to steal the eggs, and that if he could manage to take work far from their clan, they would be happy to let him go. For once, he did not know what to do. Deleo, watched him, white eyes glimmering with something strange.

"Quite a Gloomy fellow, aren't you?"

The words were not cruel, but amused. It infuriated him, and he spit back roaring for them to punish him. And still, the ice imperial before him, was calm. The golden knight, shook his head and frowned. He mused that for all his skills, he would have been an asset to any clan guard. And with those words, Deleo's eyes lit up. He addressed him now as "Gloomy" a name the wildclaw hated deeply. He told him that if he wanted to be punished so badly, he could provide assistance. The imperial chuckled, and handed him a clan crest. "You will serve our clan."

Gloomy sneered. It was stupid, how was this dragon second-in-command? Mercy would only come back to destroy them all. The golden knight listened and paused, he'd accept the wildclaw, if he promised to turn from his vicious ways. Deleo grinned again, it would be done. Gloomy was not of the same idea.

So it went. He was placed as a clan guard. The others stayed away from him, they fought and trained with him, but he had no companion, only Vormun, the golden knight, his commander, and the strange Deleo. As he spent more time with the Aurora, it seemed he would never change, but curiously, he was often visited by Deleo. The imperial would speak to him calmly, his eyes the only indicator of his mood. Soon, he had come to accept the nickname, "Gloomy" and with time, he grew into the ranks of the guard. The peace of the clan had finally claimed him. But so had someone else.

While he regretted his previous life, and learned to find peace in his future, only Deleo remained a mystery to him. The handsome leader still visited him, only remarking on his new training regimens, or the way he whipped the new recruits into shape. It was strange, but Gloomy found that it was more than likey that Deleo watched him because he did not trust him, even years after his initial introduction into the clan. Gloomy accepted it, once a thief and a criminal, always one.
He couldn't hold it against Deleo, he was only a weapon.

And yet, Deleo never said these words. He only inquired, spoke to him softly, and would leave him to his practice. Gloomy couldn't figure him out. He did know, that despite his confusion, he found himself staring after the imperial everytime he left. A warmth grew in him whenever Deleo would visit him, tell him, "What, no smile? Gloomy as ever." He felt this ... affection growing. And so it went. Gloomy began his life in the pit, but he lived it out in the tundra, fighting for others once again, and yet the flame that had fueled him was softer now, calm, perhaps at peace.
