The Eagle's Gaze

It was dawn in the Elder's Tower of Shriekwind, and Breaker was tracing the well-worn path upwards to the Eyes. He couldn't recall realizing the path was worn, that the steps were fading into smoothness. It had been four hundred years since a wondrous pair of workmen had magically mended the stairs, cracking jokes the entire time before asking if he wanted 'diamond tiles'. He still was unsure if the tiling was actually diamond, but whatever the substance was it had proven far sturdier than the stone. There were days he found himself wishing they had been immortal too. The entire citadel, even the outside of the solid stone eagle towers, was decaying slowly under the relentless passage of time.

Breaker had thrown dawn parties in the Elder's Tower for any visitors since the day it was left in his hands. He no longer told passing dragons his age, and it seemed that all forgot in time that there had never been another Lord of Ice. "Health to your long line!" They toasted. One such party awaited him at the top and they greeted him warmly as he reached the observation deck. "Stunning!" "I've never seen anything like it!" A pair of hatchlings were pressed against the glass of the left Eye and a smile came to Breaker's face. Beneath them and all around lay the eastern coast of Algidir lit up in dawn glory. On a clear morning like this the Rose would be reflected against the bay waters and the amber towers of Telvan'ectri would shine above the cold desert far below.

It was rare he saw children this far into the wilderness. If his energy had created life in the past few centuries, he had not known it. It was possible, he knew, with a powerful enough mother to match his own Icewarden-gifted talent. These two were clearly modern children, eyes shimmering like crystals. In fact... Breaker excused himself from the merchants who were still gushing about the view. He approached the two as they whispered, lost in the conspiracy only sisters were capable of. "Greetings young ones." They turned around with a start, jumping from the small ledge. "Lord of Ice!" They said in unison. "Are you enjoying the view?" He asked. He had been correct! They had been born with the unique Earthen Primal... both of them!

"Oh, yes Lord of Ice, truly!" The spiral gushed. "I have never seen anything from so high up before! Only... I wish this bird didn't have a beak so it wasn't in the way!" Her sister blushed and shushed the wriggling hatchling, clicking her own beak while doing so. "Yes, milord, it is very lovely." The delicate skydancer was already much larger than her sibling. "I am Treasure. This is my twin, Gem. We are Templan Novo's assistants." Novo was an arrogant scientist working in Telvan'ectri, Breaker had met him several times. None of them had been particularly pleasant. "I am Breaker." Was the bogsneak here?

"Your home is quite fascinating, Lord Breaker!" Burst out Gem again, speaking rapidly and tapping her fingers together. "It's so unique geologically. The stone is clearly similar to formations much further south, but appears to be naturally occurring. Can you tell me about them? There's almost nothing in our history books about the Pass. As the dangerous events in the Crystalspine Reaches show, sudden tectonic events are very possible even in the modern age-" Once again, Treasure shushed her sister. "Yes, your home is very wonderful. I'm sorry for my sister." He smiled gently at their faces, so different and yet identically bashful. "It's perfectly alright." "I don't have the answers to your geological questions, but I can tell you how the Towers of Shriekwind came to be."

Breaker walked forward and gently touched the stone. "Once, these towers were a solid mountain peak." Both children gasped. "Earth magic?" The little skydancer's eyes were wide. "Some, yes. But mostly, Ice." Treasure snapped her fingers. "Glaciers!" He smiled at her. "Very good. The Southern Icefield was more expansive in ancient times, true, but it was still quite vast recently. However, natural glacial movement is not responsible for the Pass. It was Timber."

Gem's mouth dropped open, but Treasure was confused. "Like, a tree?" Gem elbowed her sister. "No! He means Queen Timber herself!" They frowned at each other, and the little spiral made a mean face. Then, from behind, Breaker heard another young voice call out "Girls!". They all turned to see an out of breath teen wildclaw. He held out one hand, huffing and holding his side with the other. "No... No fighting!" Gem flicked her tail at him. "You're no fun Kyndarian!" Treasure flushed with embarrassment.

Breaker was surprised. "You are Kyndarin, the emissary?" At the authority in the Lord's voice, Kyndarin immediately straightened up and brushed his clothing smooth. "Yes milord! I am Kyndarin Ectri. Master Novo has tasked me with escorting his assistants on their trip." Breaker clicked his beak thoughtfully. "If these very young ones are assistants to the Chief Engineer of Telvan'ectri, then what are you?" The boy flushed. "I am a representative of my noble family, sent to report on our progress here in the south." Clearly, he was embarrassed rather than self important for it. Breaker decided he liked him.

"Well, Kyndarin, I was just telling the story of how a dragon who was not yet the great Queen Timber of Algidir used Earth and Ice Magic to carve these very towers."
