PINE forest guardian | wildfire spirit | he/him
ABOUT
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
▾ When the flameweed started showing up more frequently, Pine knew ihis forests were in trouble. He was intimately familiar with every living thing, every stone and sapling in his range of the mountains. The signs were all the same: dry summer, deeply bitter winter, windy spring. The flameweed flourished in dry soil, smothering the plant life around it in its famished hunt for nutrients. Pine worked tirelessly to clear it, but even the forest's guardian spirit couldn't keep up. It spread exponentially that spring, and by the time summer's heat settled in, Pine's beloved woods were brittle tinder choked beneath endless slopes of flameweed. All it took was one spark struck in a thunderstorm to set the mountains ablaze.
▾ Pine's home burned for weeks. Whole mountains were scorched down to a stubble of charcoal stumps, fire raged through the undergrowth hot enough to destroy even the hardy flameweed. When autumn's steady rains finally quelled the blaze, almost nothing was left but the charred soil. ▾ Pine was devastated, wandering the wildfire's aftermath aimlessly. Fire is a natural, healthy part of forest ecosystems, but nonetheless, this loss hurt in a way that couldn't be described with words. Part of Pine's duty as a guardian of these mountains is to work with fire to keep the land healthy, clearing out dead undergrowth, which enriches the soil, which encourages new life. The flameweed infestation threw off that delicate balance, and the forest suffered for it. ▾ Season by season, not so slowly as you might expect, the forest began to heal. The year after the fire, wildflowers exploded across the barren slopes and the air hummed with pollinators. Flooding washed away much of the debris and ruined topsoil. A few years later, green shoots started to poke their heads above dead stumps. These were the saplings of seeds released from tightly wrapped pinecones that had been unable to open before the fire cracked into their shells. ▾ Pine guides this process, patiently nursing his home back to life, watching it begin to breathe and whisper again as it shifts in its bed of ashes-- slowly, but steadily waking up.
