You're right to think she studies something sort of weird and gross. Belladonna is interested in different types of parasites and fungi that grow in and on things. She's especially fascinated by the types of things that grow in the many dark crevices of the Hewn City. She started studying them under the mentorship of Mawsitsit, who initially had come into her radar through tales of a den simply overrun with some sort of a slime problem. Belladonna is one of the few dragons of this lair that actually hails from the Hewn City itself, having grown up there herself. She does not remember much of her time before joining this clan, having spent much time in torpor shortly after a hurricane separated her from her original clan of Veilspuns. She knows they made their home in the Hewn City because of its familiar darkness, but knows little else about where they came from, or why else they decided to reside in the Hewn City. She has tried searching for them, but has had little luck. Other clans in the area don't seem familiar with the Veilspuns she speaks of, so in all likelihood, they left some time between when Belladonna was separated from them and when she awoke years later due to becoming infested with some sort of growing fungal growths.

Despite how little she knows about her past, she embraces her place within this clan with a great deal of enthusiasm, enjoying how readily she was accepted into it. Currently she has no real desire to reunite with her original clan, happy to spend the rest of her life here. She's very close with Demise, who shares a similar past with herself, though he recalls far less than she. They enjoy looking after the hatchlings together, telling them stories and focusing on the present instead of the past.
