This is not the nightmare:

Ami wakes sweating, breath rasping against the scream caught in her throat, as she sees again and again: an emperor rises from the Leviathan Trench, huge, snarling teeth and blasts of wild magic. I saw this, she thinks, I knew this weeks ago and it made no difference; her clan is in ruins, the blood of her friends, her mate filters bitter into her gills and she is sick with it, over and over, cannot stop herself from inhaling their deaths.

This is the nightmare:

Once upon a time there was a young fae who was empty; her frills were still and she was always cold, inside and out, and water turned to ice when it touched her skin. She left her clan and she told no one; she founded a new clan and told no one. Somehow, though, dragons began to arrive; somehow, they found her, they heard her and they saw her and loved her and just as at long last she felt her blood thaw inside of her she realized that everyone she knew was made of steam and bubbles and they were swept away by the currents, and she was left behind, an old fae who was empty, her frills still, and she cannot tell for sure that she had ever felt anything different.
