Biography

Cyanea fills their world with soft and soothing things: shafts of light through warm water, hypnotic shifting schools of small bright fish, the feeling of floating through jets of bubbles, joyful, effervescent. They have to keep their focus. There are shadows all around them, darkness on the edges of their vision but as long as they focus it won’t come free. Word has spread about them: in the deepest part of the Sea of a Thousand Currents there is a maren whose tail is the bell of a jellyfish, and if you seek them out they can take your nightmares away. One little sting, and from then on your dreams will be quiet, peaceful seas; all they take in exchange is a little bit of magic each time you sleep. Word has spread, and there are dragons aplenty who are haunted enough to make that bargain, so Cyanea can retreat into the dark and never go hungry. It would be easy for Cyanea to envy their brother; they have always been anchored, and he floats freely. Benthos spins grandiose dreams out of seafoam and air and they stand solid; Cyanea can only build things they’ve seen or they waver and flicker out. They followed an impulse they could not ignore, a hook that lodged in the core of them and pulled, hard: come home, come back to the magic that made you, come let it see what you’ve become. He follows only the tides and his own whims. He forms a wonderland with a passing thought, and they need to focus so they are not overwhelmed by the shades of someone else’s nightmare. It would be easy to envy him, and sometimes Cyanea does, cold and hard and bitter in their gut, but sometimes--when their dreamers are quiet and content, when they’re cradled in the Rift’s magic, all life and wildness and heat--sometimes they think it ought to be the other way around.
