Lore
Poudretteite was born royalty. The second child of the ruler of a large and old territory in Dragonhome, nearby the Pillar of the World, she grew up in luxury, hearing much of her ancient lineage. She was very coddled, learning needlework and the intricacies of the court, but such a life grew less and less interesting to her as she matured. She spend great amounts of time speaking to those who worked in the palace, fascinated by their different lives and genuinely wanting to know more about them as dragons. She had a naturally soft and empathetic nature, brimming with the honestly and openness of the naïve, and very genuine in what she said. Despite her caring nature, she struggled to befriend those she spoke to, and came to understand that they were purposefully distancing themselves due to her station, lest the king and queen deem such friendships inappropriate. She accepted their right to do so, but couldn’t help but to feel somewhat excluded. Many of her fellow nobles were preoccupied with things she had no interest in, such as suitors and the latest fashion. She thought many of them rather vain, and had few true friendships. She was similarly disinterested with the marriages her parents strategized for her, discovering each suitor to be so uninteresting and bland in personality. The one true friend that gave her company day to day was her lady in waiting, a dragon named Spessartine whom her parents had assigned to her when she became an adult. Spessartine was only a few years older, and although professional and respectful in public, acted as a true friend in private, dissolving the restrictive barriers of class that Poudretteite had discovered to be more of a cage than a pedestal. In time, her parents grew frustrated with her lack of interest in what they saw as her duty. They ordered her to take a partner for the good of political alliance and benefit to the family. Poudretteite tried to explain just how poorly such a life suited her, and her father was furious, calling her ungrateful and saying she was scorning what so many others wished for. Recognising that there was no way to make them understand the way she felt, she ceded her claim to the throne then and there, told her parents that she loved them but she had to leave, and that she would write them soon, and walked out. Returning to her room she couldn’t help but to stop and shed a tear. When she looked up, Spessartine was packing two sets of bags, one for each of them. Poudretteite tried to explain that Spessartine didn’t need to come along, that she didn’t intend to live as a noble. Spessartine told her that she was joining her as a friend, a guardian, a room-mate, whatever she needed at the time. Overwhelmed, Poudretteite nodded speechlessly, and the two of them set off on foot in search of a new home before the day was out. In time, the two came to Clan Snastle. There had been much searching on the road for a profession the former royal could take up, and Spessartine suggested that she might make a good therapist. Poudretteite found herself exceptionally well suited to the task, and that became her role in the clan, who listened to her story and gladly offered to take her in until she found her place in the world. Like many who come to the clan intending a short stay, both dragons soon found that their place was right there. |
