Biography
| PENUMBRA | [♫] The Hanged Man
{ Shade Scholar | They/Them | Male-Attracted } Penumbra is Clan Feldspar's resident Shade expert. Since their affliction with the Shade, they have devoted their life entirely to unraveling its mysteries—and, hopefully, discovering a cure for shade sickness. They are responsible for advising their peers in matters relating to the Shade, overseeing the extermination of Shade infestations within clan lands, and monitoring their clanmates for symptoms of shade sickness. The Shade remains an enigmatic, unpredictable foe, so not many can claim to possess intimate knowledge of it. Penumbra, as someone who harbors the Shade within them, has been afforded a unique opportunity and precious insight into its workings. As the Shade progressed throughout their body, Penumbra began to lose many of their memories. They can no longer recall who or what they were before being afflicted with the Shade. Their name, their past, their entire identity has been consumed by it. It is thought that the corruption of their pearl is the root of their amnesia; unfortunately, all attempts to restore it, even those made by Spinel, have ended in failure. Occasionally, they catch flashes of their past life in the inky blackness behind their eyes, but these small glimpses into what once was are soon swept away, to be replaced by the Shade’s will. Penumbra has taken up the habit of hastily scrawling down whatever they happen to see during these fleeting moments in a feeble attempt at piecing their identity back together. In addition to the holes in their memory, their physical form is ever-changing, at times ceasing to exist altogether, replaced by a black cloud of an unknown substance. When they can control it, they prefer an androgynous appearance, to help quell any discomfort that may arise due to the nebulousness of their biological sex and gender.

Along with Mergo, Penumbra was one of two dragons abducted by agents of the nightmare—but not for use in its twisted schemes. It desired Penumbra out of simple curiosity, because its nature and that of the Shade were similar. What it did to Penumbra, no one is entirely certain, but when Argus arrived to free them, they were already dead, choked by a thicket of thorny black vines. Whatever horrific experiments the nightmare conducted gave the Shade within Penumbra power, and it was able to overtake them, killing them in the process. Upon Argus' arrival, however, and quite by accident, the Shade revived them and was forced to retreat back into their body by the iron blade Argus wielded against it. Penumbra then fell into a deep sleep, lasting several eons and awoke only at the hint of dark stirrings within the Hewn City. They have since settled back into everyday life, their duties taken up once more, but they remain on edge and guard their blackened pearl more zealously than ever before. Their abductor, known only as the Shadowling, remains at large. code by Diamondbacked |
