There was nothing they could do. The battle had long ago been decided for them, but still they refused to yield. The air hung heavy with ash, smoke, and the coying stench of rotten fruit and putrid meat. The ground was a churning, slick slog of mud and black-stained-crimson and a flurry of other unidentifiable substances. There was a heaviness in the air that had nothing to do with the smog that obscured the sky. Something far more insidious was going on. And the small, dust colored dragon with the too-wide grin loomed on the horizon.

From their makeshift shelter, a half dozen dragons cowered. Each of them sported dozens of injuries, a few of them gingerly nursing torn limbs and tattered wings and deep gouges in fur and scales.

Lior, the youngest mage there, frowned, tongue stilling its repetitive path along the burn scorching his arm. It was an angry, spreading, searing magic that darkened his scales and left him biting back a series of whimpered groans. All in all he was the least inured; he still had all his limbs and he was aware enough to recognize the severity of the situation. A few of the others had settled down into dark corners of the shelter to rest and hadn’t moved in days. No one had bothered to check on them.

“They’re back,” someone murmured, voice little more than a whisper. It broke the silence like a crack of thunder, an excited hush rippling through.

Lifting his head, Lior stared at the dilapidated wall that served as the entrance. There was hardly a moment’s pause before two dragons pushed their way inside, scales and armor grating against stone. There was something very wrong. The normally bright expressions on their faces were gone, leaving behind only a weariness that nearly left them unrecognizable. Their pale scales were dull, covered in an insidious tar that he knew, firsthand, burned and spread.

The two muttered greetings as they picked their way over prone bodies and settled down next to Lior. The three exchanged sighs, uneasy expressions a permanent addition to their features.

“Any luck?” Lior muttered, paw clenching as a tongue of fire burned along his limb.

Lana was the first to reply. She shook her head, wincing as the motion left her dizzy. “Nothing.”

“It was a trap,” Regus rumbled, voice strained and raw. He coughed, a thick, gelatinous slime oozing from his maw.

Lior winced in sympathy.

“I’m sure The General has another plan,” Lana said, shrugging. She scratched at the pale scales along her neck, a telltale sign of unease that went unnoticed as the three of them fell into silence.

“He better not,” Regus coughed out, eyes narrowing. The sun-colored fur along his neck raised in the approximation of a snarl. Not a sound escaped him except a full-bodied shuddering hacking. His eyes gleamed, tongue lolling to one side. He rested his head on his paws, scales rippling with the force of his breaths.

At his side, Lana rested her head against his back, a low murmur filling the air. She gave Lior a quick glance, barely contained worry and exhaustion stealing over her features. For a moment she chewed on her lip before sighing. “Get some rest,” she sighed out, a sigh of smoke rising from her maw.

Coiling tightly around himself, Lior tried to ignore the churning in his stomach and the bile taste of failure and bitter magic that lingered on his tongue. It was almost impossible; the sharp taste of scorched fur and melted scales was soaked into the very earth and the walls bled despair and hopelessness.

For a long moment he wasn’t sure he would be able to sleep, but the cold exhaustion that settled in his chest only grew, and the void of sleep was a welcome relief.
