Biography

Defender - Blood Mage - Custodian

“How good and thoughtful he is; the world seems full of good men--even if there are monsters in it.” ― Bram Stoker, Dracula

Do not let anyone fool you: Bram is the only reason the House of Echidna is still standing. While Echidna might be the one who guides and fights for her House, Bram is its heart: he keeps everyone alive (and moves the blood around, when necessary). In almost all practical matters, from paying bills to household repairs, Bram is the head of the household, assigning tasks to the other dragons and taking on as many duties himself as possible. He's served in that capacity since the House's founding, and the trust Echidna places in him is "as boundless as the beautiful Mother Void" (her words.)

Bram's past is something of a mystery, even to him. He can find no records of his parents, and was raised among other orphaned Arcane dragonets by a series of tutors. He never really felt at home among other Arcane dragons, however, and has at times speculated that his egg might have been poached from an Earth flight nest. While he made a passable study of Blood Magic, his heart was never in spellwork. (Metaphorically, of course, as blood magic often required his literal heart for proper ritual casting.) He only really completed his coursework in Blood Magic because the job prospects seemed good, the pay was decent, and the degree didn't require any advanced math credits.

Bram joined the House of Echidna when he answered a job posting delivered to his door via ominous crow messenger. The posting was for a security guard, someone to watch over the house of an eccentric witch while she was away recruiting for what he assumed was some kind of cult or coven. At first a security guard was necessary, as monster hunters would occasionally menace the fledgling House, but as the months went on Bram found himself doing less fighting and more household repair. His Blood Magic abilities, for example, proved much more useful at removing the ever-present bloodstains in the house carpeting than at stopping the hearts of would-be home invaders. Bram is fine with this, as he was never the type to thirst after violence. (He does find himself thirsting after it more and more with every sink he has to fix because one the the House dragons thought they could poor a jar of unwanted teeth down the garbage disposal.)

Bram is a calm and hard working dragon, though the frequent catastrophes he's forced to deal with while overseeing the House have worn his nerves rather thin over the years. He can be quick to snap off a critical remark or glare at those who bring their problems to him on an already busy day. Despite his harsh words, he rarely refuses to help. He's liked by most of the House for his helpfulness and reliability, though some of the more chaotic members tend to see him as an overbearing killjoy.

Bram and Jigsaw are currently engaged, and have been for a long time. Many have asked the two when they actually plan on getting married, but both of them are usually so wrapped up in other projects that the wedding keeps being put off indefinitely. Bram was the one who originally assembled the robotic Jigs, who he found in pieces in the House's basement. He activated Jigs with his own magic, and though their partnership has hit its fair number of snags since then, the two are nothing if not problem solvers. Jigs is the only member of the House that Bram finds calming and comforting, and it's a common tactic to spring bad news on Bram when Jigs is around to soften his annoyance. Their shared room is one of the few spaces in the House that always feels safe, a perfectly maintained center of mundane domesticity in a house of blood and mayhem.
