The Ghost in the Forest

A stretch of alpine conifer forest decorates a far-flung edge of the Sundial Terrace, left in peace by rival dragons and smaller beings alike. Under its sun-dappled shade, some have seen a glimpse of dark hide or mirror-bright wing, and others have sworn that glowing eyes, like dim suns, follow them around the forest's boundary, never coming enough into the light to be identified.

The forest itself is the sworn charge of Sarekhan, and she guards it zealously, protecting the hatching grounds within. Her skills in combat are equaled by her talents in stealth and misdirection; thus does she keep the forest, and its many inhabitants, safe.

The Clan of the Forest Wyrm grew up around this central forest, playing in its margins and hunting around its borders. When it grew large enough to require structure, the Forest Wyrm offered a bargain: the Clan could continue their gentle use of the land she guarded, if she were given the tiebreaking vote when it is required, and the role of adviser.

When her first friend, Whist the Clouddancer, awakened to his true potential and went on a quest to apply it, Sarekhan wished him well and sought the company of that rare creature, the mock Firebird. Soon, she had gained the love of bright-plumed Aya.

On Whist's return, he presented her with an egg, and from it came a creature whose likes she had never seen: a Clouddancer with feathers as bright as Aya's, and a mind as mischievous as his father's. The Sunspot added a bright flash of color to the forest, until the day he, too, moved along.

The Forest Wyrm was not alone for long - her pursuits of non-dragon companionship would lead her deeper and deeper into the forest. First she stalked a flock of turkeys for months, until a shining bronze hen took to 'mothering' her - a strange sight, the bird attempting to preen the enormous Guardian - and then another more exotic creature, with flame-red feathers and horse's hooves. All the while, she learned more of woodcraft and more of her land, and at last, she made her choice.

The Council was called under the full blue moon, and Sarekhan made her case to the assembled dragons. As much as she loved history and the pursuit of knowledge, she loved also trickery, and illusion, and the arts of Shadow. They debated until the moon set, and at last the call was unanimous: the Forest Wyrm would, on the sunrise, cast her allegiance to the Shadowbinder.
