It was but a halfhearted attempt to hide himself behind those bushes, it is plain to see. He sticks out like a sore thumb, and he knows it. But a look at his face shows only triumph, anticipation...no embarrassment, no fear at being exposed to the predation of the Wendigo not five feet away. He is focused, tensed, frills cocked at half-mast. The Wendigo lifts its head, snuffs the air. He has been scented, if not yet seen; they have poor eyesight, but their noses are all the keener for that. It moves closer, trying to ascertain whether or not this strange, small creature is prey. He leaps from the bushes, claws outstretched, frills expanded to their fullest in threat display, cupping the air and actually allowing him to extend his leap into a glide for a few more inches. It is just enough. He hits the Wendigo full in the face, claws scrabbling at eye sockets and tearing tufts of fur from the muzzle. It seems ineffectual; the Wendigo shakes him off in short order, blinking and snorting and snarling with surprise and anger. But he has already hit the ground and run, diving under a bush and this time managing to conceal his brightly colored scales from view. The Wendigo casts about in a rage, stomping bushes flat and roaring. It seems he just made it angry. Then, the convulsions begin. Tremors at extremities soon lead into full-body shakes, contorting the tall creature's frame until it is forced to its makeshift knees. It doesn't take long after that. He crawls out from his hiding place, shaking dirt and leaves from his scales and surveying the kill. His crest rises fully again, swelling with pride. Bright colors mean "Stay away. Poisonous." So it is Flash's greatest secret that he is not. Who would fear a tiny bogsneak? Nobody. And he craves fear. Calls it "respect," but it's clear what he means, what he needs to feel validated. Poor, piddly little Flash, no magic, no innate fighting skill, awkward, frills too big, claws too small. He has spent his life learning how to craft poisons from his surroundings, coating his claws with them in order to preserve his illusion. Killed animals, Beastclan, other dragons, just to test the poisons or to make a point. And now, he has come to Stonehearth and joined the O.R.T. Why? No one knows. But there must be a reason, right? They try to talk to him. Sometimes, it seems like they're getting through. He can be charming, when he wants to be. But not for long. And after he leaves, it is though they never spoke at all. |
