Ilex was raised as a slave in a conglomerate of unscrupulous clans that found blood sport entertaining and profitable. He learned to kill and maim at a young age, starting as a hatchling faced in "to the death" matches with beastclan children. He rose through the ranks to dragon-on-dragon fights as an adult. For every dragon he killed in mixed a little of their blood into his pearl so that he would not forget - he did not relish the killing, and did not want to become completely hardened to it. His pearl is a deep blood red as a result. The only thing that kept him sane during the darkest days were his devotion to the gods. He had to assume they had a plan for him, or else why would they let him suffer so? For not only did he not have freedom, but he did not escape unscathed from his battles. His fights were profitable so his masters invested in his survival by augmenting damaged flesh with technology.
Eventually, Ilex earned his freedom and left to find a clan who would not judge him for his past. He never looked back. His new clansmates wonder if the armor he wears is something he can take off, for nobody has seen him without it. He has never said.
Ilex loves flowers, particularly red roses.

Named after the Holly genus, also called winterberry. Most hollies have evergreen leaves that are lobed leaves with bristle tips. Some holly species can undergo parthenogenesis ("virgin creation").
