Cillian is the first undisputed King to be born within their original village, but not to royal heritage. His father and mother, a master engineer and military lieutenant respectively, sent him off to the bardic college in their old territory to begin his training as a public speaker as soon as he could reliably fly on his own. He met Queen Oleander during his second year there, when she made an appearance for a spring festival. The two kept secret correspondence for the remaining three years of Cillian's studies, and were married within a fortnight of him receiving his diploma... against virtually every tradition and process required to marry into the throne. Cillian took the crown shortly before the Shade began appearing in the area. This, paired with the rather sudden manner in which he took it, brewed mistrust and outright hostility among the older populations who had seen Oleander's predecessors reign. They were seen as a foolish pair of hatchlings far too enamored with young love to handle their royal duties, and Cillian was heavily disliked as the "source of corruption that had overtaken their Queen and the royal line". After the Darkest Night, a majority of the hatred against Cillian dropped off rather abruptly. In a show of public humility, Cillian refused a co-governor chair that would have put himself on equal footing with Oleander; instead, he took a lieutenant seat at her flank, giving her true power over the Greenhouse and making it very clear who made the final call. |
