--━━━━━━ ◦ MIRUNA ◦ ━--
Miruna keeps me strong. I've never met anyone more tenacious in all my years, and she inspires me to work harder all the time. Her position is very deserved. And... There is none I could love like her, not in this life or any other. I am grateful every day that she and I continue to choose one another, forevermore.
--━ ◦ FIFTH SAGE // WIFE ◦ ━━--
// Lachlan's wife, and the mother of his children. // More commonly known as the Fifth Mistsage. She oversees the Alchemical Subdivision of the Research Division and chronicles their discoveries. // Their relationship is one softened and turned amicable by long-lasting love. Lachlan is very commonly the victim of playful teasing on Miruna's part, while she often finds gifts he has left for her about the places she frequents. The gifts themselves are unremarkable, usually trinkets that Lachlan finds that remind him of her, but she appreciates them more than anything else, taking each one as a token of his love for her.

--━━━━━━ ◦ VASILE ◦ ━━--
Vasile has distanced himself from me much, since he was young. He used to follow me around all the time, mimicking my gestures and all. Now, I'm lucky if I talk to him at all. I'd set more time aside to spend with him were it not for how busy we both are with our duties to the Archive. Still, I wish I could see him more often.
--━ ◦ HEAD NOMAD // CHILD ◦ ━--
// Lachlan and Miruna's oldest child, one of two twins. Their brother, Ilarian, has since left the Archive. // Vasile's duties frequently take them away from the Archive, where Lachlan is bound to stay in order to fulfill his own role. Thus, he sees his child more and more rarely as the months drag on and Vasile gets more and more absorbed with their own projects and less concerned with how their father might be doing. // Lachlan wonders if any of the near hero-worship Vasile displayed towards him when they were a child remains, or if time has soured their bond entirely, dooming them to grow ever the more distant.

--━━━━━━ PREVIEW ━━━━━━━━━━━━--
A protector's job is often a solemn one. The protector is the stone pillar, the masked face peeking through the shadow behind a candlelit throne, hands always glinting with steel, but Lachlan has hardly associated himself with such an image for as long as he can remember. It is true, yes, that he is an adept warrior, and it is true that his presence can be intimidating, to those who have yet to know him particularly well, but he bears a warm, welcoming, comforting aura, and many who join the Archive fatherless find in him something of a paternal figure. He has trained several in the ways of defense, including the Archive's own guard captain, and he will likely train many more, for as long as he lives, for it is his work, and he takes great pride and pleasure in it. In his own words, he would call himself everyone's favourite uncle, a role whose name he invokes only ever jokingly, however true it may be. He acts as a mentor to many, and is one of the most beloved figures around the Archive for the advice that he so generously gives to any soul hungry enough to seek it.

At first glance, however, Lachlan brooks an imposing figure. Tall and well-built, clad in filigreed cobalt armour over a layer of worn navy blue rags for clothes, he gives off the impression of a seasoned, battle-hardened warrior, which he is. He makes no attempt to hide it, either, as his primary employ within the Archive is as bodyguard to the First Mistsage
. Thus, it is important for him to come across as intimidating. However, even when his services are unneeded, he is rarely seen without his armour, as he spends much time assisting the guard captain, Xyza, with training her newest recruits. So dedicated to his work is he that a first impression earns him the reputation of a stoic, focused individual devoted entirely to his duty, with little to no time for anything else.

Quickly, however, this perception shifts. Lachlan is not hard to know, and even less difficult to learn about. He has many friends, and even more acquaintances who think kindly of him. In stark contrast to the way he often comes across, Lachlan's reputation is that of a humble, fatherly personality with a tendency to unwittingly take many under his wing as either students or something far closer to unofficial foster children. The more one knows him, the more gallant he behaves, and, under the right circumstances, he proves to be quite playful. In fact, he is only at his most serious when interacting with his wife, Miruna, for he takes nothing more seriously than his devotion to her.

Even so, more often than not, a quick glance at Lachlan earns the beholder the sight of a most jolly man carrying himself with the utmost contentment to be able to so deeply enjoy the role that he has been given at the Archive. With a variety of colourful friends to speak of and a reputation that he does not shy away from, it would seem almost as though the individual himself is too good to be true, too good of a hero, a role model, but closer inspection hardly reveals anything particularly damning, either. If indeed a dark side does exist in the heart of this joyous man, he has kept it so well-hidden that even he is unaware of its presence and the ways in which it might manipulate him.

--━━━━━━ HISTORY ━━━━━━━━━━━━--
He remembers a roadside. He grew up by this roadside, huddled in a cart, beneath sheets, beneath stars, beneath the rain, beneath skies. There was a cloth overhead, and there were no pillows beneath, but it smelled something like comfort. He still recalls the incense and the way it permeated the air so frequently, and he can feel the brush of silk. False silk. Never real. They hadn't ever had enough treasure to commission anything real.

There were bandits, at one point, and there was a loss. A great loss. But the worst of it, perhaps, he will tell, was the loss of companionship. Being surrounded by those he did not know was not the same as being with friends, with family, with faces he no longer remembers. He went from being at a standstill to constant travel, and it never sat well with him. He would ride in the backs of carts, covered in rags and sheets, but there was no incense. It wasn't the same. And when he wasn't quick enough to hide, when he was sluggish or didn't wake up on time, he suffered for it. He learned to be at peace with bruises and jabs and jeers, learned to be at peace with unfriendly faces and bared teeth.

Rescue came to him in the form of a song, a whisper carried on night's breath. It beckoned him, urged him to follow, and under the cover of starlight, he made his way to the Archive, shrouded in fog and mist and enchantment old as time. And, at last, he could remember the smell of incense again.

Dimly, he can recall how empty the Archive had seemed, that very first night, with only perhaps a dozen heads in total to populate the vast halls and their many off-shooting chambers. For it was in this quiet circle that he first met Miruna, whom he would grow to love and eventually wed, and the rough nights on the road felt like such distant memory, as though belonging to someone else entirely.

But, of course, the Archive needed willing hands and steady hearts, and Lachlan's had never felt more settled than between these marble walls, among friends. Even so, the fact remained that the Archive served primarily as a library, and Lachlan was hardly the intellectual sort.

It was Breccan, who would come to take on the role of First Mistsage, who first approached him with the suggestion. Lachlan knew little of Breccan's past, and can hardly say, to this day, that he knows much more than he did back then, but Breccan's aptitude with a sword was known amongst the innermost circle, and Lachlan was eager to hear what he had to say when he suggested that he train Lachlan himself. Indescribably eager to put himself to good use and infinitely relieved that he could now see a clear path for himself, Lachlan took to the training like a fish to water. Where Breccan's fighting style was swift, a brutal, efficient wave of steel, Lachlan adopted something that suited the way he moved better, eventually developing his own art, something more fluid and playful.

At first, Lachlan was but a guard, patrolling the halls of the Archive to ensure the safety of the others, whose roles differed greatly from his, with most of them focusing on the knowledge that laid within the Archive's walls. In time, as the Archive grew more populous, Breccan named him Captain of the Guard, a title he wore with pride, elated that he'd not only found such a fitting role for himself, but one that he excelled at. He became a mentor in his own right, following in his oldest friend's footsteps and honing the skills of a new generation of warriors. And once the Guard had grown large enough, Breccan pulled Lachlan aside and made another suggestion: a new job, a new role, yet the same, and less stressful. His mentor needed a bodyguard, and this was an honour he was grateful to accept. He rescinded the position of Guard Captain to his student, Xyza
, and never once looked back.

--━ ◦ ARCHIVIST // DAUGHTER ◦ ━--
// Lachlan and Miruna's youngest daughter. // A curious sort, Lachlan remembers Viorica best for the way she would follow Vasile around, entranced by the stories he would tell of his various journeys on behalf of the Archive. Lachlan had dared to hope that at last, he had a child whom he could mentor as he already had so many others, but Viorica's interests proved to align more with chronicling adventures than partaking in them. Lachlan would hardly, however, call himself disappointed.

--━━━━━━ OTHER RELATIONSHIPS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━---
// BRECCAN After having served for years alongside the First Sage, Lachlan has developed a very dear friendship with Breccan. Though one is employed by the other, for all intents and purposes, their relationship is of a companionable sort, and disagreements between them are rare. Lachlan sees Breccan as an equal rather than a client and is completely loyal to his purpose of defending him from harm.
// XYZA
The first and most driven of his students was a younger Xyza, whose steadfast demeanour and unshakeable nature made of her a stoic, severe warrior, a stark contrast to Lachlan's far more playful attitude. Though they suffered many disagreements, over time, their relationship evolved into something inwardly mutually respectful, but outwardly often thorny, on Xyza's end.
// ATRIA
Where Xyza came to him like a stone, weighted with determination, Atria came to him like a flare, burning bright and fast. She carried with her a drive to be the best as quickly as she could, and though she often made impulsive decisions that wound up sending her to the infirmary, she did, in time, earn the support and respect of those around her, and will always attribute her merit to her old mentor.
// ILARIAN
Lachlan's second-eldest son was most like him, of all of his children. But Ilarian's adventurous spirit could not be tamed by the Archive, and Lachlan has not seen his son since.
