BACKGROUND
Reaper, they called him, with all the affection a farmer might reserve for the beast picking his livestock away at night, for the death that steals in with the ice over long winters.

And they made sure he knew why. That the day he -- the only egg of his clutch -- hatched, his mother breathed her last. A life for a life, they murmured, when the crying hatchling had broken free from his shell, the cold, lifeless curl of his coatl mother's body around him and the depths of winter howling outside. The wrong one, taken. And so they gave him his name -- that of the formless spirit that stalked the frozen wastes, and took all those unwary enough to be caught in its snow and wind and ice.

Truly, they didn't know how right they were. And neither did Reaper. Not at first.

It happened slowly, as curses tend to do. At first it was just the winter-wind chill he carried around with him; a slow sort of edge like ice worming its way into bone. Hardly distinguishable from the Icefields themselves; but there was a sort of heavy sleepiness that settled into you if you were near him too long, like winter itself was settling under your skin. A sort of tiredness you carried around for days afterwards like being around him had taken the life right from your body.

And that was, indeed, what happened.

He grew on stolen energy and food that didn't fill him nearly as well, and when spring came and melted away the worst of the snow the clan truly knew -- when they could see the damp yellowed grass under his feet grow brittle and dead when he stood there too long, when animals fled from him in a sort of terror that wasn't normal even when facing a dragon.

PERSONALITY

Reaper is, well, very conscious of who and what he is. A killer who never meant to be one, who can't help destroying the things before him -- and as you might expect, that influences him to such a titanic degree sometimes it's hard to see an actual dragon under that shell, as though it's destroyed what he could have become.

But that's not entirely true. Not that it's easy to break through the cold, brisk disinterest, especially when, half the time, you're meant to be nothing more then a meal -- because even through his desperate attempt to feed off plants and wildlife instead, it's not ever quite enough. Easier to close his eyes. Pretend it's not another dragon whose life is snuffed out to feed his.

If you do, though, he's...a lot nicer than you might expect. Almost friendly, in truth -- if not, he's pleasant enough and polite to a fault and genuinely quite nice to be around if you don't mind his bizarre choices in vocabulary. He's well spoken and formal despite the wary distance he keeps -- it does no good to get too close.

Of course, he's not all that great at keeping that distance. He's a bit of a dork, to be honest -- he's got a really good sense of humor and a tendency to sprinkle completely unexpected jokes and sarcasm into his speech which, combined with his appearance, usually catches others off guard. He's also very easily flustered.
