Pinecone
BACKGROUND
Councilor + Herbalist he/him Even as far as dragons go, Pinecone has been around for a while. He's been wandering through the Labyrinth for years, the Icefields for even longer. He's had an interest in plant study for years, maybe something his parents drove into him, herbalists as they were -- but he picked it up well, and was already off on the same path by the time he was little more than a hatchling, clumsily wandering away from the safety of his nest to pick flowers and peppermint leaves and, on more than one occasion, almost get killed by a snake or giant cat before a parent or a clan guard swooped by to rescue him. After his parents left to serve the Gladekeeper he stayed on for a few years, helping with medicines and healing and researching mostly in his own time, but eventually the call of other lands and new discoveries proved too much to resist. He delivered his proverbial notice and took off -- and the first place he stopped was the Southern Icefields, a place as far different as he could find from the Labyrinth but not as inhospitable as the Plaguelands. Reluctant to find another clan, he went about his business, building a home in the Snowsquall Tundra that he used to store what data he collected and to sample all the plants he could find from the richest region in the Icefields. Only a few months into his stay he ran into a small Wintermane clan. Like every centaur group split from the Dunhoof, they weren't exactly welcoming -- but there was a new opportunity in a completely separate species with different practices than his own, and eventually after several offers of help, all refused, and several actual actions mostly on the part of injured foals, the base of trust was there. He served with the Wintermane herbalists for some years, but he was getting steadily on in age and he was starting to miss the Viridian Labyrinth. With that in mind he bade them goodbye, though he hadn't made it far before one of the foals, Aklavik -- now grown -- who he'd helped in the first few months and who had practiced herbalism with him showed up, insisting he take them too. After a bit of argument, he was kind of stuck with the centaur. And he was a pain to ferry anywhere, either, so it was a combination of flight and boats that took them eventually to the Sunbeam Ruins. What he found at the harbor was a trading delegation to an island in nature territory -- a place called Sierra Grove, welcoming beastkin as well as dragons. It was a quick way back to home, a safe place for both him and Aklavik, and he signed on, finding himself back in a familiar world -- and one, for now, in which he is content to stay. PERSONALITY Pinecone has come a long way from the profound lack of caution that characterized his childhood years. It's not to say he's wary, or particularly paranoid -- but he treats things with respect now, including dragons, beastkin, and the world around him, keeping in mind that there is always danger to be found somewhere, even within the plants he has dedicated his life to studying. He's gentle, quiet, and above all, kind. He seems a little like a grandparent figure to everyone in the Grove, which isn't helped by his tendency to spend days by the fire cataloguing herbs and plants while Aklavik wanders the woods and deserts, or the fact that he knits clothing in his spare time and gives it out as gifts for every event. He doesn't necessarily have much to do with its day-to-day life -- but he's very much a presence nonetheless, always making sure to appear at the Pit by the council hall for every event dreamed up by the island's inhabitants, a tendency which probably helped elevate him to the rank of Councilor. He enjoys company, even that of the inevitably-loud hatchlings; his patience seems to be endless, a far cry from what it was as a child, though he still prefers being around only Aklavik or the numerous cuttings of plants and fungi decorating his home. Almost everyone seems to consider him completely harmless -- it's only the centaur he travels with who remembers the ways in which Pinecone defended the Wintermane clan, with cunning and shrewd words rather than tooth or claw. |
