Personality (featuring the talent of MythicalViper!)
Being the clan’s astrophysicist is a lot of work. Not only does Portia need to be able to work with other dragons during her research, she also needs to continuously remind them that astrophysics isn’t the same as astronomy, or astrology, or whatever dozen other things her clanmates confuse it with. It’s about space, they always say, to her dismay. Just because it’s also about space doesn’t mean it’s the same as those others things, for heaven’s sake! No one listens to her.

Fortunately, Portia isn’t one to act on her temper. She is usually quite timid and composed, only acting out of character when she uncovers an object of interest or new discovery. She is also very curious, to the point she will break rules to see if something works - a typical Arcane characteristic not usually found in a Lightning dragon. This has confused many of her clanmates, who will approach her to get something fixed, only to watch her attempt to open a portal to some unidentified dimension with the object. Her enthusiasm is quite infectious, however, and so nobody has blamed her for any unsightly incidents. Yet. The fact that she always pays the repair fees for whatever machine she inevitably ruined helps.

That isn’t to say Portia is terrible at fixing machines, though. She’s actually quite an excellent mechanic, if you’ll ignore her penchant for using your machines to do somewhat illegal things. On the rare occasions she does decide to fix objects for others, those items usually get an upgrade on the side, as she has the innate ability to always find a way to improve something. This makes her a great inventor and creator. She’s built all of her own telescopes and magitech monitor gear from scratch, which does wonders to help the clan budget.

Portia is quite the workaholic, and so she’s usually deep in her research and analyzing the data her many machines pick up. Aside from sending lamp satellites into the stratosphere, studying water formation on moons, and calculating gravitational waves (you know, the usual), there’s always something to invent or analyze. For that reason, what passes for her laboratory in the clan is always filled with stacks and stacks of paper, assembled in a system that would take six diagrams and a live demonstration for another dragon to understand. Aemilius once attempted to help, only to end up buried under a landslide of documents about exocomets. He then wasn’t found for several months.

With all her achievements, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Portia is a perfectionist. Her ability to perfect the smallest facet of an experiment or invention is stunning, and she works with a stubborn determination to get everything right, hopefully on the first try. When things don’t work out the way she expects, she can be hit quite hard by the failure. For that reason, she secretly hates circle equations, which she rarely manages right on the first try.

Her accomplishments in astrophysics are quite impressive. She’s mapped out the celestial orbit of several different planets and moons, and even discovered a few celestial bodies on the side. She’s also created several ingenious inventions for studying astrophysics, on top of a few mechanics of magic theory and several dozen other equations that really should be impossible to think up. One might think this would make her proud and egoistic, but Portia cares very little for her achievements once she’s fulfilled them. Instead, she then turns to her next field of research and dives into it with all the enthusiasm of a Guardian finding its Charge.

Though she would prefer to be working all the time, Portia has admitted that even she needs relaxation and the occasional free time to be able to better focus on her research. She spends most of this free time with Ophelia, who can be seen as her polar opposite, as the Imperial is usually proud and somewhat egoistic. Portia doesn’t mind, though, whether it be because she knows she’s far more talented than the Imperial can ever be, or because Ophelia is actually good company, when she’s not lamenting about having to waste time with a commoner. The two can usually be found doing mathematical research together, since that’s the one field Ophelia is actually an expert in, and Portia doesn’t mind her company if that means she can get the Imperial to calculate circle equations for her. The two may seem like a strange pair, but as opposites attract, they’re quite the best friends.

Portia also looks up to Exeter and Naliera, seeing their accomplishments as her goals. This hasn’t changed even after the apocalypse, during which Naliera unfortunately perished and Exeter received part of the blame. As far as Portia is concerned it’s their achievements, not who they are, that matters. Though considering the apocalypse could potentially also be listed as one of Exeter’s achievements… well, that’s something she’ll worry about later.

Early Life (featuring the talent of MythicalViper!)
Born on the Lightning Farm as a Skydancer, Portia always had the feeling that she was missing something. Sure, life was good on the farm - there was plenty to eat, a place to sleep, and she showed signs of being a good engineer early on, so there was no worrying about ending up as a bum on the sidewalk. But still, her claws always ached for something more - something that was more than wire and circuits, blueprints and heavy machinery. She was never quite sure what this flaw in her system seemed to be, and she was ashamed to ask her clanmates. After all, she was a Skydancer - her empathic abilities allowed her to accurately guess exactly how they’d want to reply. And, well, it involved too much swearing to actually say aloud.

Thus, for months, Portia struggled with her classes and sought to try new things. She was able to quickly learn anything she got her claws on, but she could never stick with a new subject for too long, mostly because they all lacked that something she wanted. Fortunately for her, her turmoil would soon come to an end. On a mandatory class tour that was seventy percent sitting in the transportation, twenty-nine percent walking aimlessly, and one percent learning somewhat useful things, Portia found herself at the Lightning Oculus base. While she could care less about what the guide was talking about, she was interested in how the base dealt with machinery and magic. As she looked around, something stirred inside of her, and she felt that this place contained what she’d been lacking - magic.

With magic, there was so much more than just machinery and wires - she could create more. No, she could create better. With magic in her claws, Portia could envision far more things than she’d ever been able to, from crystal blenders to magical ping pong to highly sophisticated long-range cannons that could blow a ship out of water and make sushi at the same time. The possibilities were endless! She was absolutely sure that this was what she was meant to do. Though a nagging feeling told her that she was still missing something somewhere, she did her best to ignore it and set her sights on becoming the next Oculus mage.

For months, Portia studied hard, flipping through entire libraries of text and neglecting her duties on the Lightning Farm in favor of research. (Fortunately, her clanmates were very understanding - they didn’t mind as long as she was working hard at something.) In the end, while Portia wasn’t able to secure a spot as the next Oculus mage, she was called to the Observatory for another position.

Originally, Portia was crushed. What did all her years of magical research mean, if she hadn’t been able to become the next Oculus mage? She quickly got over her depression, however. At the Observatory, she encountered stars for the first time - the Shifting Expanse being far too stormy for them to ever shine. Elated beyond even the time she’d visited the Lightning Oculus base, Portia realized that she wanted to deal with stars more than anything else she’d ever touched. Forget the magical mechanisms and leylines - this was what she’d be doing from now on! She tossed her blueprints, grabbed her bags, and rushed straight to the top of the Observatory to study the stars.

Unfortunately for Portia, dealing with magical mechanisms and leylines was the reason she’d been hired to the Observatory in the first place, so she still had to do her job. After breedchanging to a Fae by choice so she could be closer to the galaxy, Portia was assigned to Wonderstark to work with magical phenomena. She spent most of her time analyzing and providing ideas for Exeter’s spells, often sneaking off to make astronomy gear in her free time. Exeter realized this after finding his assistant in the wrong place for the sixth time, and covered for her so she could research space. After all, if nothing else, he admired her aptitude.

From then on, Portia’s achievements grew, multiplied, and caused astonishment throughout all those interested in the study of space. From mapping the positions of celestial bodies to advancing the field of astrophysics, Portia was the best at what she did. Even though Portia’s focus was on stars and space, that didn’t mean she’d given up on fixing objects. If given an opportunity, she proved herself to be just as capable as everyone else, to the point that the Echo gang, led by the mechanical engineer Echo, considered her an honorary member of their gang.

For awhile, life was good. Portia was getting grant money left and right, as well as prizes and enough trophies to build an entire trophy room out of trophies for more trophies. At the peak of her career, she figured it’d be a matter of time before she was promoted to a higher position, and then she could spend all her time studying the stars.

Then, the apocalypse struck.

Current (featuring the talent of MythicalViper!)
She should’ve known something bad was going to happen. It’d been evident in the disappearing dragons and the strange reactions her machines were having. There must’ve been something she could’ve done to stop it, to stop Exeter, to stop the Shade beast. Even if her clanmates tell her it’s not her fault, there wasn’t anything she could’ve done - she couldn’t have seen it coming - Portia knows better. She had been sent to Wonderstark to assist them magically. The fact that such a tragedy had happened simply meant she hadn’t done her job well, and Portia could barely live with that.

Though Portia was fortunate and hadn’t been hurt badly compared to the others, the interdimensional sanctuary where she’d stored all her gear and notes blew up during the incident, making her incapable of helping her clanmates despite surviving the apocalypse. To make matters worse, the dragons she’d come to see as family were either hurt like Ophelia, and many of them died, including the core members of Echo’s gang. Unable to help her clanmates without her gear, and too mentally unstable to build more until Ophelia recovered from the loss of her wings, Portia felt useless for the first time in her life, and that was the worst thing a Lightning dragon like her could ever feel.

Eventually, she picked herself up, recovering as Ophelia regained her strength. Portia threw herself back into tinkering and working with mechanics and magic, determined to help in whatever way she could. However, due to the loss of her previous gear and projects, the grant money she’d previously received dwindled, and she came close to scraping the bottom of her bank. Left with no choice, she turned to Wyntre and Aemilius for guidance. With a few backalley shortcuts and potentially illegal conversations, Portia managed to regained her previous position quickly. It weighed on her conscience, but there was no other choice. In the aftermath of That Night, everyone had to do what they must, even if it meant sacrificing their morality.

Cordelie was the one good ray of sunshine in the aftermath of That Night. The Bogsneak’s golems stirred up some of Portia’s old creativity, enabling her to continue inventing. Her knowledge was nothing to scoff at, either, and after running into Cordelie and asking her a mountain of questions, Portia was able to better understand the magitech she’d come to the clan to help with. Though all her old gear was lost, she was able to round up many of her previous projects, which helped her in her efforts to make up for the clan’s new lack of a mechanic. Magitech may not be her favorite thing to deal with when it doesn’t involve astrophysics, but Portia knows what her job is and how to do it well. The fact that she can glean even more knowledge from Cordelie just by bringing sweets is a bonus and a relief to her wallet.

Trivia
╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮
>Portia and Echo frequently shared engineering techniques with each other. While Portia's depended too much on magic and Echo's were not magically reactive enough, they managed to adapt those techniques into their own styles.

>Portia used to use companion comet satellites instead. She had to stop when the fifth one crashed into an asteroid, as the comets were not cheap to produce.
