"The veil is meant to be permeable."
After the events of the Barrier Breach, a great rend in the veil that divides the mortal and spirit realms on the island of Prufrock that resulted in a massive assault on the island's residents by a hoard of malevolent spirits, it was determined that much needed to be done to stabilize and protect the veil. Though several mortal residents possessed powers suited to aiding in the task, the spirits asked that one of their number be included - for after all, spirits are able to pass most easily between worlds, and a spirit could assist them in mending the other side. Eztli and the others on the council agreed, though not without trepidation - they were wary of allowing more spirits on the island and further upsetting the balance, and they were even more leery that the choosing of the spirit for the job would cause arguments among the various factions of spirits. Lazarus promptly angered the other spirits, in particular his rival, Queen Mahdis of the moon spirits, by introducing an underworld spirit of his acquaintance he believed would do the job admirably - the lady Shroud. Lazarus was already held in suspicion by the other spirits, for he had refused to send any of his court away in spite of the obvious problems that so many powerful spirits located in such a small place in the mortal realm were causing, and Mahdis and the others detested his presumption in bringing yet another underworld spirit onto the island. Lazarus, however, had his own suspicions regarding his fellow underworld lord Kherty - he thought him to be responsible for the Barrier Breach, and he wanted to ensure that whomever was brought over to help fix the veil was in no way allied with him. Indeed, the lady Shroud allies herself with no one. Though counted as one of the underworld lords and ladies who each govern their own domains, she holds sway over no court nor maintains any lands. Instead, she has dedicated herself to the study and maintenance of the veil that divides the realms. She has always had skill at passing through boundaries and has long been able to enter and traverse the dreamscape, an ethereal plane that has tenuous boundaries with both the material and spirit realms and sometimes has its own effect on the veil. It was in the dreamscape that she made the acquaintance of the oneiromancers Morpheus and Melinoe, and the fact that they knew her - and thought highly of her - eventually quelled the arguments and grumblings among the spirits and dragons that yet another underworld spirit was joining the island's residents. Though like the other spirit residents she has assumed the form of a dragon, her form is more nebulous than the others. In some ways she is more akin to ghosts than she is to other underworld spirits. Her great skill at crossing boundaries, the frequency with which she does so, and inhabiting the space of said boundaries in order to mend tears and holes means that she doesn't often bother to fully manifest herself in material form. |
