Herald of the Icewarden

B I O G R A P H Y

Saoirse was barely old enough to fly when she set off from her home to answer the call of the Icewarden. The dream had asked her to follow him, but had not specified when, so she decided that she was supposed to get to work as soon as possible. She took on small prey at first, but all alone she was easy prey for the more powerful monsters Heralds are expected to face and found herself one day at the mercy of a Shadetouched dragon that had no intentions of letting her live. Too weak to defend herself, her death was certain until a powerful guardian pounced upon her attacker and saved her life. He introduced himself as a Herald of the Plaguebringer, Lothar.

Hoping to learn all she could from the older, more powerful Herald, she followed him and became his first student despite their opposing elements. She came with him to Amarayne where she was joined by two other Heralds, Cardigan and Karael, and this number quickly grew as Heralds of every deity came to learn in hopes that they would survive better and push back on the enemy by sharing information and knowledge. They forged friendships and unlikely alliances, but the reason their gods allowed such fraternization with the enemy was because the alliance worked. It was most notable in gentle Saoirse, who despite never losing her kindness became a fearless and powerful Herald, rising to the top of her order.

Now a champion of the Icewarden, Saoirse has less time to be with Lothar as she has students of her own. Heralds of her flight come to her for advice and wisdom which she shares freely. She does sometimes miss the days when it was only her and her teacher wandering the world, but she's overjoyed that her comrades are taking her seriously at last, if only because it means she can share her knowledge and experience with them. Her performance in a great test given by the Icewarden has also earned her many admirers, one of whom became her mate, Ujarak. Unlike her he grew up among the Gaoler, so while she now appears intimidating she is still the soft, fluffy Tundra at heart.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Though loyal to the Icewarden first and foremost, she adores Lothar despite him belonging to a rival deity. She will boast on her teacher to anyone who even mentions his name and believes him to be the greatest Herald who ever lived. She doesn’t harbor any resentment or reservations about the Heralds of other deities, holding that all Heralds should be helping each other out; after all, if a rival Herald hadn’t stepped in, she would not be alive today. Her peers are less prone to agree, preferring their gods get the credit for the Shade they destroy, but they can’t help but be drawn to the optimistic puffball.

As a Herald of Ice, she likes to take trophies of her conquests, and has shelves full of tiny cubes with small creatures and bits of larger beasts, all that she had a hand in destroying. She hopes one day to have a glorious, glittering hall of ice with entire specimens frozen forever as a testament to her power like the older members of her order, but for now has only the small collection. Some would find such a morbid collection surprising from such a sweet, lovable dragon, but she is still a Shade hunter through and through.

Over the years she has learned the true struggles of being a Herald, such as not being able to save everyone and the fact that there are times when she will get an order she does not want to follow. If the Icewarden bids it, she may have to turn on her friends or even her beloved mate and children in an instant, and to disobey would be not only treason but blasphemy. She misses the naivety she had in her youth, but is glad to be wiser now. She is glad for every day she can spend with her friends, though knows it is likely that one of these days she will be called back home and the alliance will fall apart.
