Lothar has been reborn many times over the ages, but in every life he has been dedicated to the same cause: hunt and destroy the Shade in the name of his goddess, the Plaguebringer. She came to him in a dream near the end of his first life when he was an accomplished warrior in her name, dying a rare death due to his advanced age. She promised him power to serve her in his next life should he accept it, and he gladly took the oath, passing immediately from that life in his sleep to a new one somewhere else in the Scarred Wasteland. From then on he was a Herald, a warrior blessed with divine power added to his own for the express purpose of destroying the Shade.

While the Plaguebringer was the one to reincarnate him the first time, he owes his established rebirth to the organization he allied with long ago, an honor bestowed upon those who served them well in their heyday. His job is to keep the peace among the scattered members of said group, though he considers this second to his duty as a Herald. This mysterious Order has many Shadetouched in their ranks, something he finds sad and repulsive, but a necessary evil as through them he has defeated much more dangerous and evil creatures. He keeps in constant contact with his allies, but his position allows him much freedom to roam Sornieth, so he has taken to seeking out other Heralds in these days of rampant Shade growth.

Recently he and a very young Herald of the Icewarden came to a clan boasting two Heralds in their ranks that came to his attention thanks to the connections both shared with the Order. He brought with him all of his journals and specimens of his prolific past, as well as a wealth of diagrams, maps, and texts specifically dealing with the Shade and Heralds. Though none of his pupils hail from his patron deity, he is wise enough to realize that if the old Heralds fail to teach up the new generation, they will fail and the Heralds will die out.

While he would love to purge the Shade from all corners of the world, he takes special delight in the thought of putting Ahriman, a member of the Order he is allied with, in the ground. Though he’d likely be back sooner than he left thanks to the same reincarnation cycle Lothar himself owes his continued existence to, Lothar thinks that a bit of time without a mortal form would be good for him. He could easily do it, too, as he’s amassed so much power over lifetimes of training and hard work and his connection to the Plaguebringer is very strong. To say Ahriman avoids him is an understatement.

Lothar’s approach to teaching his pupils is very hands-on. He will take them directly to an opponent, then step back and let them deal with it to the best of their abilities. Should things go south, he is there to put a quick end to things and will immediately lecture them on what they should do next time. Of course, no one goes out in the field without sitting through some lectures, and though it annoys Karael and Cardigan to no end how they are treated like children and can’t roam as freely as they used to, as a teacher they admit he is very engaging. Lothar is fond of peppering his lessons with real-life experiences and open discussion, keeping everyone involved and focused as he imparts his knowledge.

As one who’s seen many friends come and go and has lived through many centuries, he sometimes finds it hard to connect with dragons that he really doesn’t have a reason to interact with. When not with his students or dealing with his longtime allies, he is a solitary dragon. He, of course, reminds everyone that a Herald is never truly alone, and that such quiet times are perfect for communing with his deity. He works alone, meditates alone, and has made his house farther out from everyone else’s so he can live alone too. It’s not that he doesn’t like people, he’s out among them every day, he just values what privacy he has.
