"maraṇaṁ", D E A T H
a very dangerous young lad. mara is an assassin. lending greatly from his mentor, genji, he carries himself with grace & appears to bear no ill will to those around him. whilst genji is a 'claw-for-hire merely to make ends meet and keep his skills sharp when the rug business is faltering, mara's demeanour is much different. stolen from the nest as a baby by genji, and raised in a den of thieves & murderers specialising in the arts of toxicology & stealth, he has been socialised into an environment of brutality. mara is cruel, calculating and unforgiving. his resolve is firm and the boy has no room in his heart for anyone but his mentor and master, genji- though even then mara's respect for him is on thin ice, their relationship terse.
it isn't the case that mara is inherently unpleasant to be around, but one would be foolish to not feel at least on guard or highly uncomfortable. his stare is disquieting at the least, and the boy actively avoids interacting with the other brisa- not used to the cheery air that permeates the camping ground or the warm intentions of those around him. other than genji however, mara seems willing to speak with kagura; out of respect for her sheer strength, resolve, and the intrigue of not knowing what she looks like under her armour. though he does respect her deeply, the flickering impulse to kill and unmask her crosses his mind more often than one would probably hope. diver is perhaps the only dragon he is willing to be physically close with, happy to sleep next to her or simply sit near her- he appreciates that she never asks questions and admires her strength, too.
concurrent across all of those mara seems willing to trust in (even marginally), is the element of strength. mara refuses to associate with those he deems weak, an ethos that leads him to refuse to hunt or participate in patrols for the brisa- those too weak to defend or feed themselves shouldn't be alive. tuuli would ordinarily be concerned and irate at such crass egotism, but recognises the boy's aptitude for murder and appreciates that he is more reliable and readily available (should his skills be required) than genji. it's in light of this potential that he is allowed to live amongst the band. wholly self-sufficient, he does not violate tuuli's second law and as such is free to stay, so long as he doesn't expect to gain anything in return for his lack of contribution.
other brisa broadly view the lad as something as a dangerous lone wolf. his unwavering dedication to daily training and catching his own food means that the others don't regard him as a freeloader, but this does bring his motives into question- why stay at all? his murderous intent & tendencies are only known to a select few cabinet members and members of the hunting crew which cannot oversee the boy's bloodlust. the incentive of a few occasional, secret, unpaid jobs from the padishah aren't incentive enough to continue to travel & live with the band. whatever his motive for continuing to live with the brisa may be- curiosity, his own entertainment, a craving for some semblance of a normal life- it won't be made clear to any brisa any time soon. until that day his reasoning'll be shrouded in speculation and trepidation for what may be to come.
