Sobek clutched the satchel close to his chest, afraid to drop it. The precious cargo inside could not be damaged. Not after what it had already been through.

Inside the leather pouch was an Arcane egg, the surface of the shell cracked and scuffed. As soon as Sobek had seen the violet gleam of the egg in the distance, he hurried towards it and held his ear against the tiny capsule of life. The hatchling inside was still breathing, miraculously. He couldn't help but think of Crystal, his mate, who had fallen terribly ill. No matter how they tried, the pair had never been able to have an egg of their own. Perhaps this egg could change that. Crystal had always wanted a hatchling, Sobek thought, smiling. Maybe if I make her dreams come true... Maybe if I make her finally happy.... Then she can become well again.
.....................................................................................................................................
"Take it away," she hissed. "Take that thing away from me!" Sobek flinched. "Crystal, you always wanted a hatchling..." Her eyes were crazed. Her illness was getting the best of her. This isn't the gentle, kind, beautiful dragon that I married... The one that I loved.... Sobek looked at Crystal. He hardly knew her anymore. "This egg," he whispered hoarsely. "This egg will die if it doesn't get attention."

Crystal looked long and hard at her mate. Then she took the egg.... And flung it over the side of the cliff.

Sobek watched silently, tears streaming down his face. "All I wanted was to make you better again. If you're going to be like this...." He looked away.

"Then.... I wish you would just die."

Crystal's mouth formed a silent 'o'. That was the last time that Sobek would ever speak to his mate. The next day she was found in her cave, eyes glazed over. She was dead.

Orca clasped her claws together. "An hatchling! All alone, here? She'll die!" Manta looked at the pitiful thing. "I know, honey... But we can't have her. Her parents will come to get her soon... This really isn't any of our business..." "Our business?! Her parents ought to never come back! Look at her egg. You can tell the damage that was inflicted to it. And a hatchling? Here? In this weather? Manta, she has no one in the world! We could change that. Manta, please," Orca pleaded. "What if this decision means the difference between her having a real life, with real dragons.... And death?"

Manta looked at his mate, and then at the hatchling, shivering under the shelter of a tree in the distance. Then he sighed and called to the hatchling.

"Amethyst! Come here. We won't hurt you. Come with us. You're going home."

The hatchling didn't know what 'home' was, but it sounded wonderful. The most beautiful thing in the world.

Home.
................................................................................................................................................................
In just a few months, Amethyst (that was her name now) was a glowing, healthy dragon. She lived in the Fishspine Reef with her new family. She was happy there, although there seemed to be something missing in her life... Something that she sorely needed. One day this feeling became too much to bear, and she looked to her closest friend, Neptune, for help. "I can't help it, Neptune.... I love it here, but there's something not quite right." Neptune looked at Amethyst's violet eyes. For once, he found that he didn't know what to say. Why did things feel so different now? The air had a new scent. The world had new colors. He blushed. He was blushing? What was going on? Why was he suddenly noticing how beautiful Amethyst's eyes were, how good it felt that she was leaning so close to him? Neptune shook himself. "I.... I guess that's just up to you to figure out, then," he stammered. "But I'll help you. You know I'd help you do anything, Amethyst." His friend beamed.

Huh? If he didn't hold them in now, Neptune might shed tears. Tears? Tears of relief, because he was able to talk to Amethyst normally? Or tears of disappointment, because he couldn't muster the courage to tell her.... that he loved her?
..............................................................................................................................................................
14 years later

Amethyst lived in the Arcane flight now with her mate (yes, mate) Neptune. She was happy here, finally actually happy. Her life felt whole and complete. She wouldn't trade that feeling for the world. And it was all thanks to Orca and Manta.
