Biography

Valens
~The Scientist~
Lead Engineer | Lightning Representative

Lawful Neutral

Pounding waves swamped the young Imperial once more, threatening to permanently submerge him beneath the troubled sea. Spurred by yet another snide comment about his feeble body and an overwhelming desire to seek out his own clan, Valens had foolishly set out on his own, heedless of the brewing storm.
Suddenly, a crack of lightning lit up the air, revealing an icy pale Imperial. She was covered from head to toe in ropy navy scars, but to Valens, she looked utterly breathtaking.
Another wave caught him as stared, entranced, at the apparition, and he was pulled beneath the surface for the last time. Suddenly a pair of strong claws wrapped around his small frame, pulling him from the stinging waves. "Hush," a calm, rasping voice whispered in his ear while Valens coughed and spluttered in surprise. "You're safe now."

Valens is a gifted biochemical and genetic engineer. His physical weakness and crackle affliction are a result of chemical accident and spills both of his parents experienced when they were young. These deformities spurred his early interest in the biological sciences, as he searched for a solution to his supposed shortcomings.

No longer the sickly and runted hatchling that Ilsabeth rescued from the waters so long ago, Valens has matured into an imposing and ambitious dragon. His stunted wings are enhanced by an elaborate metal apparatus designed by his assistant Tephra, powered by a device of his own making. Rumor has it his unexpected growth spurt was the result of self-experimentation with performance enhancing drugs, but Valens just scoffs and calls them out as the baseless accusations of lesser scientists.

Though he possesses a keen analytical mind, Valens tends to turn into a stuttering klutz whenever he is around Ilsabeth. It was painfully obvious to the rest of the clan that he had an enormous crush on her from the beginning. He pursued the object of his desire with the same doggedness he generally reserves for his experiments, but his earnest affection only seemed to drive her further away. It was only when he finally figured out how to back off and listen to what she was actually trying to say that he won her over - an explanation that completely confuses new clan members, as Ilsbeth never actually seems to talk.

When Raytheon called him down to the labs to investigate "an anomaly", he was surprised to find a dragon waiting for him. Beautiful and seductive, yet with an edge of danger even the oblivious Scientist could recognize, Patriot was a bioengineered weapon in dragon form. When his fellow scientists asked for his help in decoding her genetic signature, he said yes immediately. Fascinated by the problem before him, he assumed they were doing this to protect the clan and prevent future Plague dragon incursions. He never once thought they would try to duplicate the findings.

Once he found out, it was too late. He was in too deep - his name on the header of every file, his findings published in magazines across Sorneith. His every step seems to lead him further into the darkness as he finds himself colluding with and even fighting right beside the dragons that would destroy the peace on this island. If Ilsabeth ever found out that she threatened the safety of their home, and her chance at a second life, she would leave him forever. So Valens lulls himself to sleep at night with the thought, that if nothing else, he did it for science.

Laila Lightning Sprite
Independent Engineer

Valens was understandably irate when the Lightning Sprite tharah so graciously gifted the clan was given to the fledgling Magneto instead, spurring a vehement contention between the two Imperials. Although this made sense at the time - the Lightning Sprite was not well-versed in matters of genetics or biochemistry - the Imperial's rivalry heated back up when Valens was officially raised to the position of the clan's Lightning Representative. Fed up by the back-and-forth tugging of the two Imperials, the Sprite filed for clan autonomy, and is now a recognized independent member of the clan's Engineers.
She is called "The ghost in the code" and is perhaps the only member on the island aware of everything going on in the different labs. What she knows, though, she'll never tell - all science is progress, and all progress is good according to the Boss.

Honeymoons with Ilsabeth in Cyan's Fire Clan
Spent some time in Jenredwolf's clan battling in the coliseum, and met Mercury who was very interested in science. He apprenticed her and the two still correspond regularly..
