"I will always find you."

The Storm Crows are the Wu Xing clan's best aerialists. They fly out to find wounded and sick patients who can't quite reach the lair, given the fierce storms and sheer sides of the Tempest Spire. Once a patient is located, if the Crows are unable to transport themselves, they will send for back-up to ensure that the patient is safely taken in. They will often fly for days on end, and their range covers almost all of the Shifting Expanse. Storm Crows are identified by their bright blue wings flashing against a dark body.

Loyal to his fierce mate, Maelstrom is often the voice of reason when tensions run high with new patients being transported back to the lair.

Jupiter’s Exit

"It had been an especially tiring day. They'd found a cantankerous Snapper suffering from a nasty Gembond infection that had paralyzed his front legs struggling his way through the dunes. Not that uncommon in and of itself, but the way the Snapper kept flailing and trying to take a chunk out of the Storm Crows every time they accidentally jostled him was certainly novel. Maelstrom was grateful to see the tail of it, finally able to light on his own balcony and tuck in for a well-deserved sleep.

Just as he settled his weary head down on his soft nest, Maelstrom heard a high-pitched shriek, the unmistakable bass bellow of his mate, and the sound of wood splintering. All thoughts of rest now forcibly ejected from his mind, the Skydancer bolted across the common room to check on the hatchlings. His eldest of the latest nest of five, Jupiter, was screeching at the top of her small lungs while her mother, Tempest, snarled and gestured wildly with with something crushed in her massive paw. The splintering sound was the writing desk - it appeared that Tempest had smashed it into the Spire wall where it now lay in a pile of kindling.

It made a strange scene, as Jupiter was almost a perfect copy of her mother. The tiny dark female Ridgeback facing off against the huge, equally dark female Ridgeback, both limned in the soft yellow glow of the electric lights, struck a permanent image on Maelstrom’s heart.

'What in the Boss's name is happening in here,' he cried. Both mother and daughter rounded on him and starting yelling in tandem. The Skydancer immediately backed away. It wasn't that uncommon for Tempest to forget her own strength when she was riled enough. 'One at a time, please,' he begged, gesturing for them both to back off a little and then (wisely) beckoning for his furious mate to go first.

The massive Ridgeback thrust a crumpled up manuscript in his face. 'Do you see this?! DO. YOU. SEE. THIS?!'

'Ah, yes but um, dear...'

'Our so-called DAUGHTER has the nerve to RESENT the GODS! She wants to DO AWAY with them. WITH STORMCATCHER! IN MY LAIR!'

Maelstrom winced, his whole head pounding from the reverberating force of Tempest's voice. 'May I see that please?' He held a paw out to take the papers. She smacked them into his palm with enough force to make him stagger and stalked off, lashing her tail.

As he scanned through Jupiter's shaky writing, his heart grew heavy. Tempest wasn't exaggerating. She wasn't even telling the worst of it. With a heavy sigh, he lowered the papers and looked at his daughter. She glared back at him, defiant.

'Jupes-'

'Don't even try, Father. My mind is made up and my heart is steadfast.' Although her small voice shook, Maelstrom recognized that same indomitable will that her mother was famous for.

'I just don't understand why.'

'What is there to understand? I've explained it all quite clearly. The gods are irresponsible and childish. We can do better.'

Maelstrom's heart clenched. 'You know that you cannot stay here. Even if I were to allow it, your mother would never, and if Wei Qi herself hears of this -'

'I have prepared for this eventuality,' Jupiter said. Her matter-of-fact tone shocked her father. How could he not have seen this coming? How could they have both been so blind?

'I...well, is there anything you need? I won't have you going out into the world with no supplies or equipment. You may be a heretic, but you will always be my daughter.'

She shook her head and proffered a small pack that Maelstrom had missed in the previous chaos. 'I am well-equipped, but thank you, Father.'

Tempest burst back into the room, shaking with rage. 'You see? YOU SEE?!'

'Yes, I do see.' Maelstrom had never felt so dejected. Before his mate and his daughter could start another screaming match, he grabbed the little Ridgeback up in his wings for one last hug. Startled, she went stiff against him. Not knowing what else to say, he merely whispered that if she ever found herself in need of help, to seek him out, pecked her on the snout, and let her go."

(Inspired by Tefnut's lore.)
