Biography
The summers of the Waste were often unkind. Blinding days, heat soaking into the black soil below, fell away to shivering nights. The lava’s flow eased with the rise of the moon. Iqwarhashe struck out from the clan on those evenings to hunt. They had travelled beyond the forest. Its stunted, barren branches had sheltered them as long as could be expected. In spring, they would return with the new generation of jackalopes and sprouting flameweed. “Make a wide berth of the vents,” Foma warned. His wing was sheltering a hatchling who kept sneezing up dust. Iqwarhashe had picked up on it miles ago: the scent of a tunnel hydra, too close for comfort. If they wandered into its territory, if it caught the clan unawares–it wasn’t a thought worth bearing, whether Foma was a one-dragon army or not. Yana cast a sidelong look at him. She was already pushing off the ground, the beat of her wings slicing through the thick smog in the air. “Rest well,” he told Foma in lieu of any promises, and followed her. ![]() He took the lead, watching the bubbling magma pools below them whip past. The scent guided him as a star to the place where something terrible under the earth created unnatural seams, deadly maws and a coiling tail thrashing and digging. “Here,” he said, only loud enough to be heard over the wind, and dove to the earth like a spear, knowing Yana was near as his shadow. His pale cloak was inextricable from the falling ash and billows of smoke. Yana’s own melded into the inky sky above and the pitch stone below. The hydra screamed and spit, but three heads were not enough to save it. When it fell, Iqwarhashe swore he could feel the entire mountain tremble. ![]() “What are we supposed to do with this?” Foma asked when they returned at dawn, trying to hide his smile. The great serpent's head at his feet gazed glassily into the ashen sky. ![]() wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it wait for it
