STORY OF THE DEAF

ACT I - before the fall

Kouga was born half-deaf and bullied because of it for his whole hatchlinghood. Still, he wanted to earn the acceptance of his parents, the clan elders and leaders alike. When it became apparent in his adolescent years that he was starting to show signs of growing into an exceptional power, some of the clan members began shunning him out more, in fear of Kouga's ever-growing powers. It left him bitter and cold come his adulthood and with a sense of inferiority in whatever he did. However, being left alone to grow estranged from those who were supposed to love and care for you was a dangerous thing to Kouga and he swore that -one day- he'd get his revenge.

One day the elders of Kouga's first clan wanted him to go alone exploring some old japanese castle that was the rumored home of a local legend; a heart-eater kitsune. They wanted to figure out if it was true and get rid of the pest. Inside, it was cold and Kouga felt shivers go down his spine. Everyone else was terrified of this place and had never stepped inside that castle, not even with a claw, but all Kouga felt at that moment was a sense of belonging. After exploring for a while he emerged into a room that was below freezing and there it -a dragon or dragoness- was. Just elegantly sitting on a chair and drinking something from a glass goblet. Kouga was intrigued but when the being turned their head towards him, he felt disappointed. This creature was the heart eater, Kouga had seen it painted along the walls of his home clan's library. The kitsune-dragon had blood all over its face and the liquid in its glass goblet was probably blood, too. Kouga was silent. Everything around him was. And then the being spoke, whispered; it didn't matter, Kouga didn't hear it. But its mouth was moving so it had something to say. Kouga scoffed. He himself had had something to say for his whole life -but nobody ever heard him. Maybe it was time for somebody else to feel like it too. Kouga turned around on his heels and left. He didn't tell about the creature to the elders and lied about what he had seen in the castle; that he'd seen nothing.
ACT II - glass hearts
Next time he met the creature was in a particularly cold winter night a handful of months later. Kouga was at his parents' home, had woken up in the middle of the night feeling pressured and uncomfortable. He'd decided to go fetch something to drink as he was quite parched. He had gone outside to drink from a nearby river and when Kouga returned the creature, yet again was just sitting there calmly -at their kitchen table- eating something with chopsticks. It didn't take long for Kouga to figure out what the thing was eating, but whose heart was on its plate, was another problem altogether. Kouga got furious and stormed out of the house and towards the elder's living quarters. He told them that the heart eater was at his parents home, eating his parents. The elders were shocked, but this seemed to prove to be a mighty fine opportunity for them to put the blame on Kouga. And that's what they did. Soon Kouga was locked up in the dungeons of his childhood clan. He could hear how the others laughed at him behind his closed-off jail. But really, the joke was on them because the heart eater continued terrorising the clan.

The third time they met, the creature told Kouga its name; Muramasa. It wrote it in blood on the walls outside of his cell bars and promised to release him once all of the clan members were dead. Kouga was not at all sure why it was doing all of this and why for him, as it seemed, but Kouga started to look forward to its promise. When that waiting time turned to years, to decades, Kouga started to scream in his seclusion, waiting for someone to hear and release him. But none heard him and when Muramasa eventually came and let him out, Kouga had lost his mind to the cold and dark jail. He became violent towards Muramasa and wouldn't listen to its protests, even when it tried to shout for Kouga to come to his senses. Only when it was unconscious on the stone floor of Kouga's prison did he leave.

ACT III - emergence of the haunted
Finally free again, Kouga was furious as he emerged from his cave of a prison and saw what were to be the first rays of spring sunshine he'd seen after years. Not that he paid those any attention. Kouga was fed up with everything and everyone, he swore to never trust anyone ever again, let alone leave his own fate to anyone else's care for a second time. Thus, for the next year or so, he wandered alone from clan to clan trying to make a living without getting close to anyone, despite a few curious dragons here and there. What Kouga didn't know was that Muramasa was still at his heels -following him. Not until he realized he was going in circles. He'd gotten lost and every clan he'd recognized was destroyed with the clan members' hearts eaten. Muramasa soon appeared and graced Kouga with its presence once again. It had a confusing look to its face; it was sad with a mix of another yet unknown emotion Kouga could not place. Nobody had ever looked at him with that expression on their face. Then the kitsune started...whispering again. There was only one word Kouga could read from its lips. Love. Why the creature had started following him in the first place was still a mystery to Kouga. He'd started to see Muramasa as somewhat of a strange...protector? But then it had betrayed him. And now? Now, it was begging for Kouga to love it? With an angry growl, Kouga turned his back to Muramasa and left.

ACT IV - sleepless death, deathless sleep
Leaving the thing by itself, Kouga wanted to get as far away from it as possible. To Kouga, it was outlandish that Muramasa was in love with him. He wouldn't accept even the tiniest thoughts of that. If it was love it wanted, Kouga would simply not give it to it. Instead, he wanted revenge; it would have to suffer. But not like he did, no, that would be too easy, Muramasa would know immediately. The revenge would have to be something Muramasa would never see forthcoming. And loving Kouga seemed to be its weakness.
