▍ABOUT

Kieran was born in the Focal Point of the Starfall Isles, a dangerous place for even a fully grown dragon to call home. His first memory is of the smell of the massive imperial corpse that surrounded (and crushed the rest of) his clutch. He can only guess the dead imperial was one of his parents, and that the other left, assuming the clutch had suffered the same fate.

He grew up alone in the Focal Point, honing his hunting and fighting skills to combat the creatures that also called the island home, and wouldn't mind making a snack out of a lone hatchling. Fighting was all he knew, and when he was old enough to strike out from familiar territory, it was how he made his way in the world.

Kieran worked as a mercenary and guard for everyone from shabby trade caravans, to mighty clan lords. The pay wasn't always great, but as long as he had food and a dry place to rest his head, he didn't care.

Too soon, however, his life as a wanderer changed drastically. Hired to fight in a dispute he knew nothing about, Kieran was captured by the opposing side, and held as a prisoner of war. His captors interrogated him mercilessly, and didn't believe his insistence that he knew nothing of value. Eventually, the tides of battle shifted, and whatever information his captors thought he had didn't matter anymore. Kieran was chained and handed over to a group of slavers, to be held in a dark cell deep beneath the Sea of a Thousand Currents. They never intended to sell him, and weeks went by with no one coming to his cell except to toss him some scraps, or beat him for whatever reason struck their fancy.

Long after Kieran had resigned himself to die there, a lady appeared. She called herself Astraea--claiming to be a princess and sorceress--and she took him from that place despite countless warnings against it. She freed him and nursed him back to health, and told him he could leave whenever he wanted. She'd done this before, she said, bought and freed slaves whenever she could without arousing suspicion. Some of them left as soon as they were able, but some of them stayed out of loyalty and gratitude. Kieran joined the latter.

He pledged himself to Astraea as her knight and bodyguard, and takes his new position very, very seriously. She can be a bit reckless, in his eyes, but then he never expected the job to be easy, and if it was, part of him thinks he'd be bored.

What Kieran keeps close to his chest is that he's fallen for the princess, and serves her as much out of love as he does out of gratitude. He's pretty certain she doesn't feel the same way about him, and keeps his mouth shut for fear of inadvertently putting pressure on her. He's content to stay her guard and nothing more, as long as he can be at her side.

NAMESAKE/ETYM.— From the Gaelic Ciarán, meaning "little dark one" and "dark-haired" or "black-haired" when applied to people.

TRIVIA—
• An old injury has left him blind in his right eye
• His right wing was broken and never healed properly. It hurts him to try and spread it fully, and flying is out of the question.
• Osysza is his constant companion, though Kieran is the only one who has ever seen her. She appears as a manticore, but moves as a formless smoke. He doesn't know what she is or what she wants from him, but he trusts her at his side.
• He experiences some mild claustrophobia, particularly in dark rooms with small or no windows.
