Leonidas

Occupation: mercenary captain Personality: Indifferent, snarky, efficient, headstrong, hard to control. Appreciates the smaller joys in life, e.g. a fresh meal or a sunny day. Neither extroverted nor introverted - he's somewhere in the middle. He's adaptable and not picky. “Shallow dragons believe in luck or in circumstance. Strong dragons believe in cause and effect.”

Leo is the successor of Valdemar, who has been the clan's single hired hand almost since the beginning. He and Valdemar were friends briefly, and during that time, Leo learned his trade.

After Valdemar's departure, Leo and a few other lone swords-for-hire banded together after a series of impromptu brawls, missions, and gatherings. They were all equals, initially, without a leader figure. However, soon Leo became top dog - but without earning the position.

All members were older than him. Most of them respected Leo's new position because they respected Valdemar. On this basis, they silently agreed to let him have a go at it. The oldest dragons gave Leo a chance because they cared less to acquire the position for themselves, and cared more about an efficient distribution of roles. If Leo proved himself to be an efficient leader, he will have earned their respect too.

The ridgeback was aware of the situation, but he always had faith in himself, and this time was no different. He worked hard from day one to become better and stronger, and now the vast majority of his mercenaries stand behind him with confidence. Leadership comes with responsibilities and a lot of baggage, which not many of them want to even touch with a ten foot pole, so even those who harbor some jealousy toward him accept the current state of things.

After several months, as their numbers grew, they named themselves "The Black Army", after a great historical mercenary army one of them read about in the clan's library. Not because they'd like to follow in their footsteps, but just because it sounded cool.
