In Shadow Bay on a moonlit night there was a cavern on the ocean. Filled with dragon nests and tidal pools, the moonlight illuminated bioluminescent jelly fish and glowing blue-green algae in the water, and the cave walls were covered in bioluminescent fungi and worms, and the air was filled with glowing fireflies. There was an earthquake knocking eggs out of the nests. They rolled into the tidal pools as fungi and glow worms fell down hitting fireflies as they dropped. The tidal pools filled with all these bioluminescent organisms, which all covered the eggs imbuing them with glowing bioluminescence and patterns of the ocean from being rocked in crashing waves of the tidal pools during the earthquake. The bioluminescence infused the eggs in several ways. Some infused the wings so that they glowed on dark bodies. In other eggs, due to minerals that bonded to the egg in the cave and water, the bioluminescence bonded to the body as gems, or as striations of lines of color, like minerals found in the earth. In another variety the bioluminescence infused the egg as runes, and these very rare dragons become lair mages. So there are several varieties of Luciferins due to this, 1) Pars (wings) and 2) Gemma (gems), 3) Magus (mage). Their bioluminescence glows brightly in the dark night, sparking bright as they fly in the air. Due to the variety of nests in the lair that night Luciferins can be any species, but they have specific traits and colors related to their miraculous and unique birthing event, which include bioluminescence and patterns and colors emulating the ocean and waves at night in moonlight.

Luciferin is a word distantly based on the Latin root lucifer, or “light-bringer”, and is a generalized word for the light-emitting compound found in bioluminescence organisms. The wings of Luciferin dragons contain a small-molecule substrate that can undergo a special enzyme-catalyzed oxidation. This creates an excited state of the molecule that then emits light as it decays to its ground state, thus giving Luciferin dragon wings the bioluminescence.
