If you walked into the clan's lair, Arzu wouldn't be the first one to catch your eye. Despite her natural brilliance, she never makes a racket or tries to show off. She's modest and honest, with warm violet eyes. Her beauty and sweetness is unpretentious, and her lovely personality keeps everyone close by.
Arzu tends to the hearth in the centre of the clan's lair, never letting the fire go out. It's a place where the clan gathers, and the last place any visitor might look. If you happen to venture there, however, you can find the hearth warm and inviting, and Arzu's mesmerising eyes fixed on you. A spot next to the hearth will get you a free stick of marshmallows and - if you're more daring, a prophecy. For despite her Shadow heritage, flames are the source of Arzu's power, and within them, she can see everything. |
It's unknown how Arzu came to the clan. Some say she was born from the hearth she now tends to. Others say she was a passing soothsayer whose stay became permanent. Whatever the case, Arzu is now an important fixture in the clan. Not only does she serve as the clan's oracle, serving prophecies and dishing out omens for everyone who wants a taste of the future with a spice of gloom, she is also a counselor. Arzu has a powerful sense of empathy, able to connect with any and all kinds of dragons. Sometimes, her mere presence enough - bathed in her cozy aura, many dragons have found comfort. Other times, if her warmth isn't enough, Arzu knows exactly how her clanmates are feeling and what to say to make them feel better. It's great, but also slightly creepy. As far as most dragons are concerned, mind readers don't exist, and the ones that do tend to have a slight tendency towards supervillainy or psychopathy, whichever one comes first. When she's not reading her clanmates' future or tending to the flames, Arzu can often be found in the hatchery, quietly watching the hatchlings and protecting them from any outside threats. She seems to be able to make any hatchling sleep well, and anyone who's ever slept in her embrace has woken up refreshed and having had their best dream ever. It seems that Arzu has the ability to pull hope from the deepest depths of any dragon's mind, letting them remember what they fight for and allowing them to continue striving for their dreams. |
Though Arzu has a gentle, almost ethereal quality that she plays for all it's worth, she can be the best ally you've ever met - or your worst enemy. Her fire burns not just in her hearth, but within her as well. Threaten any one of her clanmates, and you will be getting a one-way trip to the deity of your choice. She is not afraid to stand up for herself, and she is not afraid to stand up for others, either. Laugh about someone's dreams? You'll find your den burned down to the ground. Call someone's goal wishful thinking? Prepare for a decade of bad karma. It hasn't been proven that Arzu is the perpetrator of those few mysterious disappearances, but to play it safe, just don't make her mad. You will not survive it. What makes Arzu truly mysterious, however, isn't her cloaked origin or her connection with dreams and wishes, or even her act of disappearing dragons. She is of Shadow heritage, and by nature, she should be better at illusions and manipulating the darkness. Yet Arzu's specialty is fire. She seems to be a dragon blessed by the Flamecaller; the flames rushed to her protection whenever she is in danger. Her change of mood affects the colours of the flames, and whenever she uses magic, it's not purple fire that comes first, but a brilliant, red-gold flame that can burn anything, even other flames. Her fire seems alive and, well, ancient, almost as if it is being drawn from a source that is not herself - almost as if she is the reincarnation of a primal creature in dragon form, walking the earth in a hidden form. But that's just silly. Reincarnations are children's tales, and besides, what could Arzu be the reincarnation of? A hydra? A pheonix? Pfft. |

I can feel the silence straining
About to burst out from the seams To shout that no one should be hushed When on the grand pursuit of dreams. And for those who are not heard We ought to raise our voices higher Everyone deserves the chance To chase that sets their soul on fire. ~ e.h |

They say phoenixes are symbols of the gilded, molten sun A mark of victory for the battles over darkness it's won They say phoenixes are beautiful, with eyes full of loving light They set themselves on fire so they can rise to fly greater heights. Yet one phoenix is different, she shunned the day and higher flights She might've been a child of the sun but her heart was dark as night Her fiery feathers were brilliant, burning away wishes and dreams Showing the mortals of the world the truth of reality. She was beautiful and she was terrible She was a song with rhythm wrong She craved destruction like hungry flames She cared not what devastation she wished be done. As long as her heart and content She could do anything she wished To drown the mortals in sorrow Force them to meet the reaper's icy kiss. "What is there to like of this? What is there to gain from doom?" Her fellow birds of feather asked her as she sent more souls to their doom. "You know we represent wishes and all the dreams that must come true "Yet you've gone against our nature; what a horrible path you choose." |
She replied with careless grace that she had no love for the earth She could devastate the lands with fire and still laugh with joyous mirth "We are phoenixes who never die; we will always rise from the fire. "Yet the mortals you claim to serve? Why to us they're not worth a single coin higher." The sun looked down upon the world and by the Eleven, he was displeased "Are you foolish enough to think you owe the world nothing? "You creatures gain your power from none only than me. "Yet you would flaunt this power; destroy the mortals whom I love and warm "You would send them down beyond this life with body and soul torn. "A lesson I will send you, foolish firebird. "I will teach you that the death you think is funny is far from what could be the worst!" The sun's curse fell upon the bird as one day she flew through the skies Bringing harsh, blinding life to the world and not stopping till she saw a hatchling The tiny dragon was broken, but still up did he stand Eye full of determination to get from life what he could demand. "Oh, little mortal," she cried. "How foolish you must be. "What makes you think that the sun is dimmer than your own destiny? "You are barely clinging to life; it's almost as if you fortune has denied. "What can you hope to do in this world - look, you're struggling to just get by." |
"I may be a child," he said, in a voice soft and clear "But I know as long as I keep fighting I'll get somewhere "If I never try to struggle I'll always stay here "And I refuse to live my life hemmed in by fear." For some reason the phoenix's heart was warmed By the foolish dragon whose courage seemed to burn He was like a flame, but brighter than any fire she'd ever seen And for the first time she thought she understood the importance of dreams. Dreams were what made you struggle They were what you reach for when you turn to the night sky They were the reason you kept living Instead of just trying to survive. They were your purpose, your life, your light They were the moon that guided you in your darkness night. And like the colours of the ever-changing fire The phoenix turned from cold blue to amber She strove to help the hatchling Even if it's just her name that he could remember Was it love? She thought not. It was simply how she was entranced by his struggle He was like a flame in deep ocean blue He was her miracle. |
But the sun's curse had been deeply inscribed There was no way the phoenix could do; decide This was a lesson to rid her of her self-centeredness To let her understand, to clear her eyes of mist As the hatchling grew, more formidable did he become Humble as ever, even after battles won He became clan leader, ruler of the world As the phoenix watched over him, proud as she could Then one day came the tragedy A fatal wound with no remedy. She watched as her miracle bled out between her claws Blood marking her feathers, highlighting her flaws "I repent!" she cried out to her creator, the celestial orb "Please, let his wounds be cured "Let him live, let him fight, let him dream forevermore." No answer came from the sky that day As the phoenix's miracle withered away He grabbed her feathers weakly, eyes filled with dismay Dying at the very spot he laid. He coughed, then spoke, and went still as could be "Please listen - a last, selfish request from me." |
"Anything," she sobbed. "I will do anything." "Then please help those who still struggle and remind them of their dreams." His last breath passed between his lips and among her feathers did he die The firebird toss her head back and with all her strength she cried. "if there is anyone to blame here, then the fault must be mine." What was the worth of her immortal life if she could not share it with her love? "A life like this isn't worth living unless the one you care about does." So she set herself on fire Burn her body to the bones Hoping if she ceased to exist Her sins she could atone Rising into the sky, she trailed ashes in her wake In a whisk of wind and fire, she was no more But a powerful magic is imbued in every phoenix's body And her soul could not burn Her magic spread throughout the world Sweetening the dreams of many as somewhere out there She is once again reborn. |
