Many, all over Sornieth, believed in the eternal balance of the black and white cycle. Everything that happened would have a counterpoint. Nothing could truly go wrong, not with nature's harmony at work. Something, anything, would always bring the balance back to the midpoint. In fact, many dedicated themselves to this belief, to keeping this balance in the world. Yin and Yang themselves had departed long ago, after all. He remembers snippets. Brief flashes of a life that he (used to/never) had, long before the (don't remember, stop, make it stop) happened. Long before he became what he was today: marauder, terror of the seas, hated by all (even himself). He remembers laughter, the tinkling of bells, quiet chanting in the night. He remembers a few fuzzy faces, muzzles spread wide in such (un)familiar grins. He remembers warmth and peace, the likes of which he has never felt again since. Sometimes, he looks at the scarf that coils loosely around his neck and wonders. He doesn't remember it (in either life). But he knows the soft fabric is a reminder: of panic, worry, finality. The end of something. Something essential. Sometimes, at night, when he gets the chance to release his illusions and rest, he's tormented by the clawing feeling of loss, that sense of failure and crushing disappointment.
