Hel is the ruler of the underworld, Helheim. She was born of a giantess and the god Loki and takes on many aspects of the both of them; powerful, cold, and indifferent. She is viewed as neither good nor bad as she nurtures the deceased but punishes those who have wronged others in their life. In some stories she is thought to be half dead and half alive.
