Death and regret hung heavy about Samson, like a cloak sodden from winter rains. His handsome and fair features were twisted by guilt, his red gaze unable to meet the eyes of others without flickering away in shame.

The incident, bloody and tragic, had been labelled as an accident; a simple mistake born of negligence and distraction. A death resulting from such a thing was horrific enough for the clan to come to terms to without any need to speak dark truths such as ‘shade touched’ or ‘possessed’.

Swiftly the blame was laid at the feet of the only one to witness the occurrence, tight lipped as he was about any specific details. For hours the imperial was interrogated about the scene he'd been found in. What, Why, Who. No straight answer was given. All that could be eked out of the now-disgraced knight was a pained admission of guilt and the repeated whisper of ‘forgive me, please forgive me’.

Sentenced to exile the guilt ridden imperial wandered from town to town in search of a way to make amends or ease the pain in his heart. Time became meaningless, each step leaden as he trudged, no longer caring where the road took him. He had lost count of the days that had passed, the places he’d drifted by, the hostile creatures he’d fought, when a skydancer's cry for help finally pulled him from dark thoughts.

With delicate wings tangled in clinging vines and most of his body sunk beneath the murky silt the skydancer was a sorry sight. Only his long pale neck and forelegs remaining above. Letting out another tired cry the imperiled dragon struggled, only to cause himself to sink deeper. "Hold still, you're making it worse!" Samson approached with caution, aware that his greater bulk might cause the unstable ground to further collapse. When he was within range of the smaller dragon he leaned forward and took hold of the vines in his jaw, pulling them and the ensnared skydancer free of the squelching mud.

Later that evening saw Samson sharing a fire with the incredibly grateful Astiron, a trader in trinkets and curiosities. As he preened his feathers and coat free of lingering pieces of swamp, the merchant told his rescuer of his destination, a vibrant trade-city called the Bastion where all were welcome regardless of their past. It took some urging and even outright begging, but Samson was finally convinced to accompany Astiron on his journey to the airship port, mostly because he was convinced the giddy young skydancer would get himself in trouble if left alone.

Oddly, the imperial found himself resting deeply that night and over the next few days of travel his heart felt strangely lighter, his thoughts unclouded. Attributing it to the positive (if somewhat annoying) disposition of his new companion, Samson decided to make it his business to see the trader safely to his destination. If the Bastion proved to be as forgiving a place as Astiron claimed, he would offer his services as a volunteer guard. Perhaps through using his strength to protect, he might find redemption for the blood and shadow of his former life.
