When he was young, Alistair underwent a procedure that changed him forever, Leaving him supposedly sterile and decreasing his lifespan, it increased his strength and stamina by a lot. However, the leader of the project was killed unexpectedly, leaving only him and Lena behind.

With his fear of taking charge and Lena's general resistance to anyone but her taking charge, they fell into a natural pattern of just drifting where they wanted to or needed to. As time passed though, they were eventually taken in by a welcoming clan where Lena could research their procedure and hopefully find a way to reverse their sterility and decreased lifespan.
