Yuina was the child of a large clutch, and as such she was left to her own devices on occasion. It was not that her parents were not loving; certainly they were, but children of her clan were even expected to seek out light and learning from a young age. So it was with Yuina, though she often wandered into sections of the scholars' libraries that were perhaps not so savory. The librarian was not one to hinder a child's learning, and merely watched her with a wary eye as the little imperial ran her paw carefully along books in long-lost tongues, brow furrowed in concentration as she sounded out words that hadn't been spoken in centuries.

It wasn't long before Yuina was considered both a miracle and an aberration. Light dragons marveled at her unique abilities to decipher ancient runes, but others considered her talents a waste. Yuina took much of what she read to heart, and liked to experiment in old ways; scratching out ogham sticks, reading cracked bones, and watching flames until she ended up at the healer's for eye pain. A disappointment to stuffy scholars, an oddity to mind-readers, herbalists and the like, and generally avoided by ordinary dragons, Yuina soon decided to leave her clan. Her parents didn't like to see her go, worrying for her safety and sad to watch another child walk away from their nest, but Yuina read her fate in the stars and saw that it lay elsewhere.

Her journey led her almost directly to a dragon just about as odd as her. Yuina padded right into Echo's den, much to his chagrin, and sat down to help him mix potions without a word on his part. Echo had no idea how to react to such as intrusion, but his concoction turned out perfectly, and the imperial was quiet enough for his liking, so he let her stay, on the condition that she slept at the very mouth of his den. Night after night, she edged closer, until, only pretending to be begrudging of it, Echo laid down to sleep with Yuina nestled by his side. The next morning, their tails were tangled and Yuina's breathing soft again Echo's neck.
