Once a gallant statue that graced the gates to an era bygone, Thomas was reanimated in a wondrous spectacle attended by a grand audience of two: smitten Ishbel, and the grave doctor. In Ishbel’s blind infatuation, she had ignored the inevitable decay that had roosted in the sculpture’s ruins. Indeed, Thomas was miraculously sentient, but magic isn’t perfect; neither was he. The statue had been chipped, worn, and torn, and as life imitates art, Thomas was sightless, unfeeling, a replica, not an individual.

Well, that wouldn’t stop Ishbel, would it? An antique deserves care. In between her daily duties, Ishbel tended to Thomas’ fragile physique and wove tales to lull her beloved to rest. He seemed especially partial to dramatic retellings of battles, and was always starstruck by the time the heroes triumphantly saved the day. It was no surprise, then, that when Thomas was finally deemed fit for vocation, he was immediately drawn to guard his home.

Thomas proved exceptional and bewildering. He was capable of standing perfectly and vigilantly still for hours, a trait almost certainly linked to his clandestine origins. Ishbel had to teach him to stretch every so often to ward envy, but Thomas was still lacking in conversation, colleagues, and friends. He would eventually pick up some of the reins in the tangled web of small talk, but Thomas remained a foreigner. Alone, if he admitted it.
