Felicity curled up amongst the mountain of pillows, holding a small carved animal. She ran her claws against the form of a dog, her favorite one. It was painted to look like a red-breasted hianu, the colors were perfectly blended, and the eyes were two small beads of which great care had been taken to set in. “I shall name you the king.” she said, playing out her newest fantasy. “Or perhaps my prince in shining armour, and we will live happily ever after.” Felicity looked up from her playtime to see a knight, standing in the entrance of her room. “Princess.” he said, bowing his head. She grumbled, not wanting to deal with royal duties that she knew he was about to list. “The king is becoming very impatient. The ceremony will begin soon and you are not ready.” Felicity grunted, hiding her head in a pillow before she heard the knight sigh, before walking off. Just as she thought she was home free, her father barged in, red in the face. “Felicity!” he shouted with a bellowing tone. “What are you doing in bed? We must knight the newest heroes of the kingdom ON TIME!” The king calmed himself down, brushing down his cape, before looking up to see Felicity bawling. “I don’t want to go, I want to play!” The king frowned, picking her up and carrying her down to the great hall. He stopped outside the doorway. “Now Felicity, you must shape up if you ever want to be the queen that this kingdom needs. What would your mother say?” Felicity did not meet her father's gaze, only shrugging. The king lightened up, stroking one of Felicity’s horns. “You’ll be a good girl, right?” She nodded, still looking to the ground. “Now.” The king reached out and opened the door, holding Felicity's clawed hand with the other. He put on a regal face, waving to his subjects as he passed, reaching the two thrones which had been built especially for them. Felicity just clung to her toy dog. The two sat down, as a row of handsome looking dragons entered the room, each looking more prepared for battle then the next. Felicity glanced to her father, who looked so regal and responsible. She then looked over to the empty throne that her mother had once sat in, trying to imagine herself in that seat one day. She propped herself up, and tried to look more ‘ladylike’, as her father had said. She skimmed the ranks of young dragons that one by one came up to the king, bowed, and had a sword placed across their shoulders. She tried to think of which one she would most like to be her own knight in shining armor. |
