Biography
Religion Old Gods Residence Mirage Occupation Temple Keeper |
Vaughn was raised with a reverence for holy places that carried into his professional life. He attended the Royal Heliopolan Academy, traveling from his home in the Halcyon Sound to study at the renowned college. Trained by pioneers in the fields of archaeology and religious studies, Vaughn's thesis was a detailed account of religious symbolism and motifs in pre-dragon Sorneith. It impressed his colleagues so much that he was given a grant to continue his work- work which eventually led him to Mirage, and the Great Stone Temple carved into its bluffs. Earning Faysal's trust was no easy feat. Vaughn spent months tinkering and inventing little trinkets to help out around the village, ingratiating himself to the other members of the outpost before Faysal would deem to speak with him- and then it was another few months before he was allowed to set foot in the temple. Now, he bases most of his studies out of it, exploring further out into the desert surrounding the outpost in search of other hidden ruins in the sand. A curious and studious man by nature, Vaughn focuses most of his attention on his scholarly studies, or on his hobby of tinkering, mostly new inventions to help him in his amateur spelunking and ruin diving pursuits. His brother Vivace often tries to discourage him from his interests, but Vaughn cannot be swayed from his lifelong, and often dangerous, passion. |
“Surely you don’t mean to enter the ruins alone?” Vaughn starts at the voice, gripping his bag tightly to his chest. He’d thought himself alone, at the edge of the temple, sand whipping past him in the cold desert air. It’s dark but not pitch black, stars shining bright and clear above them. The storms have calmed for the moment, though the breeze threatens its eminent return. He turns his head slowly, searching for the source, and spots the man settled on top of a broken pillar, feet tossed carelessly over one side. He’s watching Vaughn with curiosity, idly flipping a gold coin between his fingers. Vaughn can’t make out much of his appearance, except that it seems almost gaudy. Black swathes of cloth stand stark and severe even in the darkness, and serve backdrop to the dozens of gold chains and buttons that decorate him. He has a black mantle around his shoulders pulled up over his head as hood, but Vaughn sees the glint of gold incisors when the man grins. His cheeks color. “I can’t see how it’s your business,” he says slowly. Cautiously. He’s not prepared for a fight, has little in the way of combat skill. No magic to speak of, either. He’s an inventor, a tinkerer, an artificer when required. He understands the traps and mechanisms of the forgotten places he explores, could recreate them if need be, but head-on collisions are not his forte. “Everything’s my business,” says the man loftily, and hops from the pillar to the ground. Vaughn winces, nearly lurches forward to- what, try and catch him? he’s far too big- but the stranger lands gracefully, as if a 50 foot drop was nothing. The night breeze blows past Vaughn, insistent. “I’m just saying, it seems strange for a delicate little thing like you to wander alone. Here there be monsters, pup.” He stalks forward, predatory, and Vaughn quickly pulls out his pistol, hands shaking. The man stops, and laughs. “The pup has fangs. You can put that away, darling. I’ve no interest in mugging children. It just so happens I’m about to go tomb-raiding myself.” He winks at Vaughn, and extends his hand. Vaughn keeps his pistol trained on it. This doesn’t seem to bother the man. “Carth. Shall we?” Later, trapped in the tomb with no way out, Vaughn will regret saying yes. |
