Firebrat

"You're the king?"

The coatl had all of his gems and coins and fabrics and flowers piled up on the highest rock in clan ground, sunning himself amid his finery. I had to repeat myself a few times, but he opened an eye and looked at me, eventually.

"I am Lord Firebrat of the Djinni's Clan," he said. "King of... all these rocks."

His words were sibilant but also slurred, and his breath smelled of fermented fruit. Well, at least he was content to lie drunk on top of the clan's hoard, instead of exerting any other authority.

"Your majesty," I said. "I have taken it upon myself to keep a history of your clan."

"Oh?" He paused for a moment, but decided to keep his eyes open. "Who are you, then?"

"My name is Endri."

He laughed, rolling over in the treasure to look at me upsidedown, with a long span of silk tangled up in his feathers, scattering coins. "No one here has names, Ennnnnndri. What have they called you?"

"AndMirrors," I said. "I thought this would lend itself to record keeping."

He laughed again. "I will permit this."

"With your blessing then, how is it that you came to power?"

He did not reply, but shifted a bit while I waited, and was quiet. He had fallen asleep.

A firebrat is a small, disgusting insect. This name was given to him; he did not choose it. I do not think he knows what it means.
