"Levant, I don't think we should do this," Akari whispered nervously, trying to pull away from Levant's grasp. Her eyes darted left and right to see if anyone was near. "Someone's going to see us."

In response to her words, Levant pulled her closer by the waist. His face was so close to her that their foreheads were touching. "For once in my life, Akari, I don't care about the rules. Consequences be damned," Levant huskily murmured in her ear. She could feel his hot breath down her her neck, making her shiver in delight. "All I know is...I want you."

His lips suddenly touched hers, giving her no time to react nor protest. At first the kiss was soft and tender, but it quickly turned hot and passionate. Closing her eyes, she leaned in and allowed emotion to take over her mind. Any thoughts Akari had flew out of the window. Time had stopped. In that moment, the only thing that mattered was them.

Obedience and respect. Those two characters have been drilled into Akari her whole life. Ever since she was young, her parents and others adults have taught her the importance of obedience and respect. Being the clan's royal priestess, everyone had high expectations of her. She was expected to be a lady of grace and purity.

She must always do the right thing. She must always obey those above her. She must never do anything that could cause disgrace to their clan. Her life was built on so many rules; but not once did she question or complain about it. No, she simply complied to them all.

However, everything changed when Akari met the serious and stoic warrior named Levant. She started to question the rules. She was even tempted to break them.

It all started one morning in her clan. Everyone was either nervous or excited about the visitor coming. Apparently, a faraway clan had proposed to make an alliance with theirs. In order to prove their loyalty and trustworthy, they were willing to send one of their most excellent warrior as an ambassador. He was to stay with them for a couple of months, and he was to arrive today.

Normally, matters such as politics or alliances didn't really concern Akari. She kept out of it since none of it was part of her duties nor was it her business. However, she couldn't help but feel excited at the prospect of meeting someone outside of her clan. They didn't get visitors much.
Maybe she'd get to speak with him if she was lucky.

Upon first sight, Akari couldn't take her eyes off him. The warrior was a tall silver haired man. He had a serious and dignified air about him. Clearly, he wasn't one to be messed with. His captivating brown hazel eyes seemed to hold no emotions. Only coldness and perhaps even loneliness?

Based from what she heard from her clan mates, the man's name was Levant. He was from a clan situated in the Rotrock Rim called Aestherius Entitas. The clan was known to be a ruthless group of dragons who were once outcasts. Did it mean he was an outcast as well? Perhaps that's the reason he seemed lonely? Akari knew she shouldn't care about these matters, but she just couldn't take him off her mind.

With all the excitement going on, Akari hadn't been able to see him since he arrived. One day, however, while she was taking a walk in the gardens, someone had bumped into her. The force was enough to knock her back. She was about to fall when a strong arm suddenly grabbed her by the waist, supporting her upright. When she had come to her sense, her eyes widened as she realized she was face to face with Levant himself.

"Are you alright?" Levant asked. His voice was deep, husky, and melodious, but there was no emotion in it. "Apologies for bumping into you. I wasn't looking where I was going."

A faint blushing creeping up her cheeks, Akari shyly nodded. "Y-yes, I'm quite alright. No need to worry. It happens to us sometimes." Their close proximity to each other embarrassed her. That and he was still holding her close.

Realizing what he was doing, Levant quickly let her go and stepped back. "Sorry," he said, a hint of embarrassment in his voice.

"You're embarrassed. So you're not completely emotionless after all," Akari smiled, laughing a bit.

Levant's eyes widened a bit in surprise. "Excuse me?" he managed to say.

"Oh, I'm sorry. It's just that you never seem to show any emotions. For a second I even though you were a robot," she replied.

If he was offended by her words, his stoic face didn't show it. "Emotions aren't needed in my line of work. I do what I'm told. I follow the rules and law. My feelings don't matter."

Akari was a bit shocked by his words. She could somehow relate since she was taught to obey herself, but not expressing your emotions? It was the first time she heard of such a thing.

"I've been taught to obey the rules as well. The emperor's word is law after all," she responded. "But we can express our thoughts and feelings about it. Your leader must be very strict."

Levant nodded in agreement. "Yes, my leader can be quite strict, but he does listen to his people's opinions. I am the one who chose to follow blindly. That is how much I respect him."

"I see," she hummed. "You must have a very good leader then for him to have earned your respect."

"Yes. I owe him my life," he quietly replied. She was curious as to why; however, it didn't seem like he wanted to talk about so she didn't push further.

An air of silence fell around them. Their eyes were held captive by one another. Just looking and staring into each other's eyes. What was this bubbling feeling inside of her? She just met the man for goodness sake. It was him who broke the eye contact.

"Umm...," Akari suddenly spoke, breaking the silence. "Do you mind telling me about your clan? I rarely ever hear stories outside my clan. That is, of course, if you have time! I wouldn't want to keep you from anything."

Levant was silent for a long moment. His face was so hard to read. She couldn't guess what he was thinking. Perhaps he didn't want to interact with her? Was she bothering him?

But he finally nodded. "Sure. I don't mind," he responded. "As long as you tell me about your clan as well."

And so, that was the start of a building friendship for them. Akari found his company to be pleasantly fun. They got along surprisingly well for a warrior and a priestess. Sometimes it was hard to talk to him because he seemed to quiet and distant. However, as time passed on, Levant started opening up more to her. It wasn't everyday they got to meet since both of them have their own duties to fulfill. But when he had time, he'd come by to the temple to see her.

She learned that he had a twin sister named Levlia. Both of them were abandoned as children in the wilderness. Levlia was sickly and frail so their survival depended on him. He abandoned all his emotions such as fear and sadness in order to focus on supporting them both. His leader Hubris was the one who found them when they were almost half dead. He raised them up both as his own. It was the reason Levant respected him so much.

As months passed, the more time they spent together the more Akari realized she was in love with him. Would she dare tell that to him though? Did he even feel the same way?

If he did, he didn't show it in his actions. In fact, as Levant's departure drew near, he became more distant. He rarely, if never, came by the temple to see her. Whenever they'd pass each other someway, he doesn't even look at her. It made a sensation of build up inside her chest. Did she do something wrong? Does he hate her now?

One day, Akari couldn't take it anymore so she confronted him about it.

"If you have a problem with me, you can say it instead of ignoring me," she said on the verge of tears. The pain inside of her was unbearable.
Levant, however, gave her no response. He just stared at her with his usual poker face.

"If you're just going to ignore me, why befriend me in the first place? At least tell me why you're avoiding me. Am I not your friend?" This time her voice has escalated to a shout. She was hurt, and she wanted him to see that.

"That's the problem!" His voice suddenly boomed loudly. His hand was clutched on his chest. "I don't see you as a friend. Whenever I look at you...since the moment we met I get these unusual feelings inside of me. I've tried everything to ignore it but nothing works. So the only thing I can do is to avoid you."

His response had shocked her. Was he saying what she think he was saying. "D-does that mean that-?"

"No, these feelings I have for you. They cannot be," Levant cut her off. "Relationships aren't allowed outside my clan. I cannot break the rules. Please. Don't let me break them. Just leave me alone. Forget about me. Find a better man. One that won't hurt you." His voice was weak, and his eyes were filled with pain. He glanced at her one last time before he turned and walked away.

Akari wanted to stop him. She wanted to hug him from behind and never let go, but her body couldn't move. All her strength had left her body. It was futile to stop him anyway. Levant was a man who was set in his ways. She simply watched his back disappear from her sight. She knew then and there that her love will forever be unrequited.

The rest of the days went by were unbearable for her. Akari knew she should just forget about him, but she couldn't. Whenever she'd close her eyes, he was all she could see. She tried her best to smile and be happy on the outside, but inside, she was a mess. He only had a week left before he was to return to his clan. After a week, he'd go back and she'd never see him again.

Just when she decided to try to forget him, he turned her world upside down again.

It was just a few days before his day of departure. Akari was once again taking a walk in the gardens. The familiar sight made her think of their first meeting when he bumped into her. Perhaps she should've never initiated a conversation with him. If so, she wouldn't feel this hurt. But she didn't regret knowing him. She didn't regret falling in love with him.

She was calmly looking at the group of koi fishes swimming around the pond when she heard a voice behind her.

"Akari."

Her heart dropped. Even without looking back, she knew that voice so well. Why? Why was he here?

"Why are you here?" she quietly asked, her lips trembling. She didn't want to look at him. She knew she'd burst into tears if she did.

"You probably hate me by now. I know you don't want to see me. But I just have to tell you this before I leave...I tried. I tried to keep away," Levant replied. His voice full of sorrow. "But I can't, Akari. I can't stop thinking about you. It's the first time I've felt this way. All my life I've focus on serving my clan and protecting my sister. The time I've spent away from you I've realized maybe it's time I got a little selfish and focused on what I wanted. And that thing is you. I want you, Akari."

Akari didn't know what to say. Was he going to bring her hopes up only to dash it again? She merely turned to look at him. She saw how pale he looked. Clearly, he hasn't been sleeping and eating well.
"This is a selfish thing for me to say so I understand if you reject. I'm good with swords. I'm not good at matters of the heart." Levant ran a hand down his silver hair as he thought of words to say. "I'll probably mess up quite a lot. Our relationship would have to be a secret and long distance. I know that is a lot to ask. But if you can find it in your heart to accept all that and still have me then I'm all yours." When she still didn't say anything, Levant's shoulders drooped. He was losing hope.

But in one quick second, Akari's arms were around him, her face buried against his chest. "You silly fool," she softly whispered. "How can I not forgive you? How can I not want you still? I've been waiting for you to say that all this time. I-I thought you really didn't want me anymore. I thought you left me."

He carefully wrapped his arms around her as if he was holding a fragile treasure. "I know. I'm sorry for being selfish all this time." He tilted her chin up so she was looking at him. "Are you sure you want this? We probably won't see each other very much. Won't you get sad?" His voice was full of insecurities.

Akari gave him a sad smile. "Of course, I'll be sad! But we can write to each other. And even if we're apart my feelings won't ever change for you. I love you, Levant."

Before she could react, Levant leaned down and kissed her softly on the lips. Their lips touching ignited fireworks and butterflies within her. Once he pulled away, he rested his forehead against her. "What did I ever do to deserve you, Akari? Can you hear my heart beat? It used to beat only for me to survive. It was empty and cold. But you changed me. Now, till the last breathe leaves my body it will always only beat for you. I love you too, my love. I always had and always will."

And so, a few days later, Levant left to go back to his clan. Yes, it was sad, but Akari saw him off with a big smile on her face. The sweet nothings and promises he had whispered to her was more than enough to assure her of his love.

A long distance and even secret relationship would surely be hard, but the love they had between them was worth it. When two people are meant to be with each other, no distance is too far, no time is too long, and nothing obstacle can break them apart.
