FIRE DEMON

[ CUNNING | CHEEKY | PRANKSTER ]

He is fire,
scorching through the land, he does not rest.
Pounding, throbbing, thudding,
His heart, a bleeding core.

He is a hell raiser,
creating strife, he engulfs the land.
Wailing, screaming, bellowing,
His tongue, a quick and cunning whip.

He is a wild one,
Carving his own path, he knows no fear.
Charging, unflinching, daring.
His spirit, a restless beast.

He is fire,
Lighting the way, he inspires.
Laughing, smiling, loving.
His heart, a binding core.

Like fire, like water, they say, utterly the same and utterly different.

He’s molded from flame itself, with eyes like the flashing suns, deep scarlet and burning embers, his
hair falling in short tangles, matching the deep crimson robes that flutter on his back.

Fire demon, they say, because he can spark flames at the tips of his fingertips, can watch as his surroundings curl into dust and ash.

And he’ll smile, all jagged and deadly edges, prickling with dangerous fury.

Stay away, they learn to say, learn to shied away. Stay away, or else Jianghuo will burn you into nothing.

He practices his art away from his clan, away from the crowds, the ones who treat him like outcasts. It’s a grassy clearing, a river gurgling softly as he snaps his fingers and watches the flame blaze forth. He sculpts the flame to his will effortlessly, watches as it roars, swirling, an inferno rivalling the sun, forces it to heed. It sputters, wisping into the wind.

She’s woven from water, fluid grace and gentle elegance, the protector of something soft and flowing, vast and infinite.

As gentle as Ripple may be, she’s still deadly.

Because water is a soothing lull, whispering and hushed, coiled like a serpent ready to swallow.

The waters have drowned more people then she can count.

They make quite the pair.

It’s odd, at first, quiet, bare touches, brushing fingertips, ruffled hair. But Ripple learns to trust and Jianghuo learns patience, hands locking loosely, Ripple’s head leaning into the crook of his neck.

“I love you,” Ripple says, one day, when they sit in a field of flowers, listening to the soothing lull of the river. There’s something warm woven into her tone, and Jianghuo can’t help it, he chuckles, red hair falling into his eyes.

“Yeah,” he says, tone affectionate, and he reaches out hesitantly to cover Ripple’s hand with his own, touch gentle. “I love you too.”

And Ripple laughs, the mirth in her voice colored like fire and starlight, bright and radiant and beautiful.

Jianghuo pulls her closer, Ripple leaning into his embrace, the skies dancing above.

Jiang Huo stood perfectly still behind the tree. His eyes were focused on the spot where he had carefully concealed a small hole. Thankfully it was autumn, so there were plenty of fallen leaves to lay over his trap. It wasn’t a deep hole. The unfortunate person who happened to fall into it would not suffer any broken bones. Jiang Huo was not in the mood for that type of distraction today, he simply wanted an innocent (as innocent as it could be for a fire demon) diversion. A noise to his right made Jiang Huo turn, his heart rate increasing. Thank the gods, he thought to himself it feels like I have been waiting here for ages.
The man who emerged from the trees was just the sort of person Jiang Huo had hoped would stumble into his little trap. Xi Yun, Peacemaker for the Emperor was an ideal victim. With his attitude of always finding the good in everything, he would never suspect that there would be an obstacle lying in wait for him on his path. He also wouldn’t be suspicious enough to look, or be quick to anger once he fell in and turn the prank into a fight. Jiang Huo held his breath as Xi Yun made his slow approach. Then finally, the fateful step occurred. Xi Yun’s left foot made contact with the leaves, then with a few thin branches, and then with nothing. The rest of his body fell forward, his arms pinwheeling to maintain some sort of balance. However, he fell nearly face first on the ground. It was time then for stage two, and Jiang Huo grinned as he summoned a ring of fire appear around Xi Yun has he struggled to pull his leg out of the hole—his white robes becoming stained with dirt as he wriggled around. Jiang Huo chuckled to himself when Xi Yun jumped a little in panic. But his joy was short lived, because before he could do anything else Xi Yun let out an exasperated sigh before shouting, “Jiang Huo! I know this is you! Help me out of here!”
Jiang Huo rolled his eyes, upset that he hadn’t been able to move on to stage three for a final scare—coming out in all his demon glory engulfed in flame.
“Was it the fire that gave me away?” Jiang Huo asked sauntering out from behind the tree.
“I’m surprised you even have to ask,” Xi Yun said holding out one of his arms, careful to not have it too close to the fire, “now would you please be kind enough to assist me.”
Jiang Huo waved his hand and the flame circle disappeared. He then turned around to leave. As soon as his back was turned he smiled. He only took a step before quickly spinning on his heels and laughing at Xi Yun’s stunned face. “Were you really not going to say anything? Were you just to let me leave you in a hole?”
“I probably would’ve said something eventually,” Xi Yun said, “before you got too far away…but really Jiang Huo, I would like to not remain in this position any longer.”
Jiang Huo laughed a little as he closed the distance between him and Xi Yun, and then helped him out of the hole.
“Well, I don’t suppose you’d tell me if there were similar snares along my route,” Xi Yun said dusting himself off.
“I don’t suppose I would,” Jiang Huo said with a grin.
Xi Yun let out a deep sigh, “I guess I’m just going to take my chances. Goodbye Jiang Huo.” And with that he continued the way that he had been going.
Although it did not go entirely to plan, Jiang Huo had been pleasantly diverted. He walked in the opposite direction Xi Yun had gone, leaving the hole visible to the world (yet doing nothing to fill it in). As he walked he conjured small balls of fire that he tossed from one hand to the other, in a half-hearted juggling manner.
He began to go through the list of people who had annoyed him recently. He thought about the types of minor and major inconveniences that he could inflect as payback to fill the rest of his day. Jiang Huo had been so focused that it took him longer than it should have to realize that the ground below him was starting to slope downward. He stopped and looked around. These woods were one of the few places that he could safely claim to know like the back of his hand. It had been the place of many a brooding walk, and of course the site for several of his best pranks. Yet, here the ground was, at an incline he could not recall ever being there. Then, he heard something else that was out of place. The sound of water running over the earth.
“What in the name of all below—” Jiang Huo said, quickening his pace. He rushed forward, pushing aside branches of trees that he knew had never been there before—despite them being fully grown. The river he ended up nearly stepping in was undeniably beautiful. Even as a fire demon with natural aversions to the element of water, Jiang Huo couldn’t help but stare in awe. Where the sunlight filtered through the leaves and touched the surface sparkled like rare gems. The water was so clear you could see all the stones beneath its surface and the fish that swam merrily along the currents. As Jiang Huo stood, a heron landed on it’s banks and stepped into the water—and he could swear that the moment it did the feathers covering its body shone.
Then, breaking the tranquil scene Jiang Huo had found himself lost in, water erupted up from the river in a column that sent the heron back up into the air and frightened the fish. Jiang Huo took a step back as from inside the column a face appeared, forming from the water with glinting eyes full of anger.
“What are you doing here?” the face demanded, in a voice that was unfortunately too melodic to be really threatening.
“I just…I just was walking and came across this river…” Jiang Huo said, for once in his life having difficulty finding words.
The face looked him up and down, before blending in with the column of water again. Then, with a sudden splash the column fell once again distressing the nearby wildlife. In its place stood a breathtaking young woman. Her pale skin shone like the surface of the water, and her hair was a light shade of blue and swirled around her face. She was wearing a silver robe that hung loose around her frame, and was tied at her waist with a white sash. She stood upon the water, little ripples running over her toes, with no sign of her being in danger of falling in.
“Please leave,” she said after a pause.
“Why?” Jiang Huo asked.
“Because…” she faltered and kicked up some of the water with her right foot, “because I asked nicely and I don’t want to hurt you.”
“I have just as much right to this forest as you,” Jiang Huo said, “and therefore I see no reason why I shouldn’t be here. Besides, I have walked this route a hundred times and never seen this river here before and I’m curious.”
The young woman looked up at him through long lashes, “I’m sorry to have cut off your route, but I would appreciate if you would leave me alone.”
“You?” Jiang Huo surveyed the river again, “You’re…the river?”
“Not exactly,” she said, “I’m the nymph of this river and I just relocated after my last home—my last home was…” and she trailed off—Jiang Huo noting she was trying to hold back tears. There were many pieces of this encounter that he was struggling to comprehend. The first was the presence of a river nymph and her river in what he had selfishly always thought of as his woods. The second was the fact that ever since she had appeared, his cheeks had started to burn—and not out of a fiery rage like he was used too. He suspected it had something to do with the fact that his heart had also begun to race inside his chest. As Jiang Huo watched her eyes become glassy he was finding himself overcome with the desire to reach out and comfort her. The concept of comfort was making his head spin.
He cleared his throat, “Well, if I promise not too do anything to tamper with the—your—this river, could I stay?”
She rubbed her eyes with her hands, and forgetting herself for a moment made eye contact with him again. For a minute time stopped as he took in just how vibrantly, otherworldly blue her eyes were. Her mouth fell open a little before she looked down at her hands, which were fiddling with the end of her sash. “I suppose, I suppose that would be alright. But one wrong move and you’ll regret it.” Another column of water shot up around her and splashed down heavily taking her with it. Jiang Huo had to dodge out of the spray, concerned by what affect the nymph’s water would have on him. He looked at where she had disappeared, wishing that he had asked her name.
Over the next couple of weeks Jiang Huo found himself returning to the river frequently, to sit on its banks. He felt like he was going against his nature to sit so close to a body of water, but he couldn’t resist the pull it had on him. She didn’t show herself to him again for a long time, but when she did he tried his best to hide his excitement. It was almost a month since they had first talked, and her entrance wasn’t as startling. She simply rose out of the water, and walked to the bank where he was sitting. They had a proper introduction where he found out her name was Ripple. He teased her a little about the fact that her name was perhaps a little too apt for what she was, and he worried only after he said it that perhaps such a comment would upset her. But she laughed, in a way that Jiang Huo could only describe as sounding uncannily like rain. They spent many an afternoon talking, pleased to discover things they had in common such as music and art.
It took him a while to tell her what he was…because he feared that it would somehow divide them after all the time they had taken to get close. He had to tell her eventually though. When he did, he found himself feeling suddenly self-conscious. As part of his speech he conjured a small flame from the tip of his finger as proof and when he did Ripple seemed suddenly hesitant and anxious. It reminded him of the first times they had talked and his heart sank. Then she stepped toward him, and held out her hand to him, “Could, could we try and touch?”
Jiang Huo felt his cheeks redden, like they had that first day. He had considered, hoped, and even feared ever so slightly this possibility. However, he had also decided a while ago that it was worth the risk. So, he reached out his hand and took hers in his. When nothing but a little steam raised from their interlocked fingers, they looked at each other and smiled.
