They say it was her that finally caused the clan to divide, or at least that she had some part in it.
She did, but not in the way they suspect.
Baroque is one of the strongest suporters of Clementine, both because of the kindness of fae and her hatred towards Watcher. She is mother to Flat, and serves as the caretaker of the dead for both clans, though she swares her alligance to the clan of Fallen Stars.
Because of her work, she is not the most popular among the clans, and often seeks to hid in the background rather than be the center of attention. Because of this, she is not close to anyone besides her son and Clementine. The only one besides those two that could clame to truly know her is her former mate, Paragon, whom separated from her when the clan divided her and dearly misses her, but whether she misses him in return is unclear to all but Flat. Despite this, she can accasionally be seen in the company of PosionRoot or Valkinto.
For some unknown reason, she hids her face behind a mask and seems to never take it off. Those that had known her in her youth says that she had a beautiful face and that her use of the mask was very sudden and without any clear cause, making the reason why she hids her face even more curious.
Sunset broke over the water-based caves where the two clans made their homes, painting everything in sight with shades of gold as if wishing to bend the truth hidden in the colors of world with undeserving glory. As the colors ripened, then darkened, a pearlcatcher with a face hidden behind a mask lighted down on the eastern cave, the first to bath in the light of a new day and the first to drown in the darkness of the night. She shook herself, then entered into the welcoming coolness of the cave, perking up at the sound of the chatter of dragons enjoying their evening meals. At first, she hesitated, washing her dirt stained claws in a stream flowing in the cave, then joined her son, a light blue guardian, to enjoy her own dinner.
“Another one buried,” she heard a wise coatl say from somewhere nearby, “Shame to see him go.”
She nodded her head respectfully, her mind flashing old dragon she had just earlier honored with a grave. As she satisfied her hunger, her eyes glanced over at the lightly colored fae watching over the dragons with soft eyes. The fae whom had weathered so much for the clan seemed to be growing older by the day, all because of… no. She halted her own thoughts. She would not dwell on the past and that wretched clan, it was not her nature.
As if to contradict her silent statement, a nocturne dropped a sweet-smelling scroll near her plate. She picked it up, going over the carefully written letters with a quick glance, before tearing it to pieces. “Another love-poem?” Her son complained, “It’s as if the break never happened. Shouldn’t he keep his nose in his own clan’s business?”
That’s right. She thought to herself, hastily returning to her own plate. Only few could freely move between the clans, and the highly praised champion of the Beating Hearts Clan was not one. She could, in some respects, move freely, for death knew no boundaries, but she had taken her side, and he had taken his.
And yet, how long will it be like this? She wondered, how long will the clans hold their fragile peace? She sighed, letting herself return to the mess hall of the clan of the Fallen Stars.
She could not dwell on the past. Death could not be contained, whether by boundaries of clans or by peace and war. Death never rested, and there was always work to be done.
