Hans had a difficult past. He grew up the youngest of thirteen siblings who constantly teased and mocked him (and three of them pretended he didn't exist for two years). For a long time, his only companion was his familiar Sitron.
That is, until he went to Elsa's leadership ceremony.
Hans had been plotting for a while to become the leader of the Arendelle clan to get his brothers' attention. However, when things went very wrong for Hans, he realized the error of his ways and retreated to the Tangled Wood in shame, disowning his family and making a plan to remove himself from dragonkind...
But when he and Elsa crossed paths once more, with very similar stories to share, Hans realized there might be hope for him. She told him of a clan- the Bellum clan- where she was now living. It was very accepting, she said. There was another dragon with a similar story to his who was now working as an assassin and being of good use to the clan. His mate, Rey, was good friends with Elsa, and oh, maybe Hans could make a new life there...
So Hans agreed.
