Sakura
The Flower-Tyrant
~~~
So turned the wyrm, the goddess-tyrant,
All that lived to ash and dust
And blighted lands that once shone, vibrant.
So turned the wyrm, the goddess-tyrant,
To face her son, a god aspirant,
Who struck at her, a killing thrust.
So turned the wyrm, the goddess-tyrant,
To join the land as ash and dust
In the depths of the Viridian Labyrinth stands a grove of trees unlike any other. Gnarled and ancient, their silver bark coils upward into the sky along great fingerlike branches; their roots seem to force the worn earth beneath them asunder, millenia of erosion leaving them bared to the elements. What leaves these trees have are twisted and sparse, and they wither and brown too soon to offer any sort of shade. What soil does remain between the roots is loamy, brown, and lifeless.
There is a dragoness who lives in the grove - rare to see, rarer still to speak to. Her hide matches the silver-rusk of the roots; her eyes bespeak her true nature and the dying of the grove: the deep unnatural red of the Plaguebringer's servants.
She coils between the trees, a jealous guardian - those who tarry too long in her Grove do not
leave. Her talons shred at bark and root, leaving thick burls of golden sap in their wake - her teeth make quicker work of any who try to impose on her isolation. Even the beasts of the Labyrinth no longer stray into the silver wood..
And for that one day, the dead grove
blooms.
At the temple Hanami-ji, there stands a grove of cherry trees centuries old, tended by the monks for generations, and in that grove of trees there lives a girl.
Her hair is the color of cherry blossoms, but her eyes are dark and shine like jet, and her dress is the color of a sparrow’s wing. Visitors to the temple see her, sometimes, wandering the grove, and call out to her, but she does not answer.
The girl who lives in the grove does not speak. She does not have a tongue.
The monks call her Kotori, and bring her offerings. Starch and taro, seed and grain – she watches with wary eyes as they leave their baskets and go, and when they return, the food is gone. What is not offered, she takes – an improper offering leaves fruit rotting, bags of rice torn open, and flour scattered across the floor, ruined by feathers and excrement.
The oldest of the monks say that it was not always so – that once, the girl dwelled within the temple, her laughter ringing the eves. She sang, then, more sweetly than any chimes, and would sit up early in the mornings listening to the waking birds. She left the grove, once, as the trees lost their leaves – and returned like this once the last snow melted, mistrusting, vindictive, and silent.
An old man, a widower, lives in a small house on the other side of the mountain. Every so often, he visits the temple, and watches the girl with soft, sad eyes. She pays him no mind, but the sparrows flock to him, taking seed from his hands, until he rises to leave and they swirl away like a cloud into the bushes.
