Reanna

*dig, scrape, dig*
Reanna dug into the cool, flat ground of the Reedcleft Ascent.
Her mate, Redwood, watched in awe as she worked; It was an odd, yet natural, compulsion that drove her to perpare their nest.
Redwood placed a few Firestarters next to the nest.
He knew, being a coatl, Reanna would want something hot to finish the nest.
"Are you sure this place is safe?" Reanna asked.
"Yeah," Redwood replied, "My birthnest is on a nearby pillar."
This was enough for Reanna, she continued digging. The hard flexible bamboo would provide shelter against the Windswept Plateaus' harsh winds; Reanna could sense this.
She took the firestarters, buried them underneath the nest, and layed down.
Redwood nuzzled his beak aginst her soft feathers.
"I know you're nervous," her told her, "but I know you'll make an excellent mother."
"I will," she replied, "Because I have you with me."

Redwood and Reanna did not know why, or how, it happened; One of their new eggs was changing.
What had been layed as one of a pair of wind eggs was fading; The shining lime-green shell had greyed, the many lighter green spots turned white, and the swirling outer wisps became a deep purple.
A compulsion, similar to nest biulding, had overcome Reanna.
Redwood watched sadly as his mate headbutted the sickly egg out of the nest.
"Is this really nessecary?" he asked mournfully, "It's our baby."
Reanna's face flashed between several emotions; first anger, then sad, and atlast almost solemn.
"It's a bad egg, Red," she said in a quiet tone, "We can't help that, it's just a bad egg."
Reanna swished her tail at the darkened egg, pushing it further out of the nest.
"Can't we still hatch it?" He pleaded, "It's not rotted, I can smell that it isn't."
Reanna glared at him.
"I don't enjoy this. It's a bad egg."
Redwood looked on as Reanna headbutted the egg once more, sending it rolling down the Reedcleft Ascent's grassy, northen slopes.
"But how can it change so much?" Redwood asked as his new egg rolled and bounced closer to the infectious outer rim of the Scarred Wasteland.
Reanna turned away from her mate, though he did manage to see the tears in her eyes.
"I don't know."





"It was a bad egg."
